    Tripod heads?

Which type of tripod head do people find most useful for various scenarios.
    Many thanks,
    Malcolm.

I only shoot landscapes so use a decent ball head, then once set up lock it down - but it really depends on your interest

      Cheers,
Just aquired a Manfrotto 190 XPROB tripod which came with the 488 RC2 head.
Still new to photography so trying a bit of everything.
Dare say I'll work with this set up at the minute, then I can decide if the ball head suites my needs or need something different.
      Malcolm.

I had a similar head with my Manfrotto 055 but this year upgraded to a better ball head -

offers more locking points and will take the weight better on odd angles - I was finding the basic one supplied with the kit used to slide if using heavier lenses like the 11-24

The type of head is a bit of personal choice and I've never really got on with ball heads. I went for Manfrotto XPro 3 way head, not light (weighs a kilo) but can take up to 8kg load. Really like the friction settings that help when making adjustments.

this is the reason travel tripods fail - only decent heads / tripods are heavy :)

                  Re: Tripod heads?

I mainly shoot hand-help but for landscapes and long exposures I do use a Manfrotto 055 and have done for years. I got the shop to fit a Manfrotto 168 Ball Head when I bought it and, like the tripod is very sturdily built. I've found it is important, especially with the weight of current cameras and lenses, that the ball is clamped properly.

                  Cheers,
                  John

I have a Manfrotto geared head which sit on a carbon fibre tripod. It's great for landscape work.

I've modified it removing the original quick release plate with one of these (see link below) combined with a Kirk L bracket. This allows great flexibility for portrait and landscape orientation of the camera on the tripod.

                        Re: Tripod heads?

I mostly use pro-master tripod heads. The 3 styles I use are a gimbal for nature on a large tripod, pistol grip for my lightweight travel tripod and a ball head for my monopod.
