Do you do this before LR? I'm a Windows Explorer person and just prefer copying my raws over to folders then using LR to edit them. I don't want LR to organise them, I find it too ituney which I hate

I create a folder with a meaningful name, copy images into it then open LR and import.

I do everything within Lightroom, creating a folder for the year, then a folder for each month within the year. Then I import photos via a card reader into the respective month, using the date as default. I then give each dated folder within that month, a more meaningful name.

i think I need to read up more that that initial process, as far as I see, the importing is creating a link to the original file, so if I move the original file to another folder the link place holder in LR goes blank. And when I delete the link/import I'm always convinced I'm deleting the original.

If you start using Lightroom, you need to do everything within it. If you move a file or folder, or rename them you must do it within LR. If you delete a file in LR, it will ask you if you just want to remove it from the catalogue or delete it from the drive.
