    Re: The Orde r of St.Asaph- 3rd Oct 2016

Surely every image posted is not for a critique?

Personally I think this set of Nat's is an excellent example of one of the most important aspects of photography - reportage. These images will mean a lot to those involved as well as providing interest to many others.

They also show what a cracking camera the 6D is for those occasions when flash might be obtrusive.

    Well done Nat!

            Re: The Orde r of St.Asaph- 3rd Oct 2016

Agree these are good record of the event and have lots of detail.

Have spent a bit of time looking at these and I think the auto WB is not coping with the conditions well.

I think if you look at the white vestments (?) the tone varies greatly. To me the WB in the second image in the first post looks about right however they have a distinct 'orange' tone in The Blessing. The tone of the stonework varies too in the images.

Seems to be a bit of variation in exposure too, if you look at the first three images the window to the outside varies in brightness and in the 1st and 3rd the people look to have very warm skin tones probably due to under exposure. If you look at the histograms this should show what the exposure is like, I'd guess 1 to 1.5 stops.

In the old days of film I would have used a grey card to determine exposure and colour chart in the first frame so that colour balance could be adjusted in the darkroom (old style PP). Interior photography of this type is not something I do these days so maybe someone else could suggest a way to achieve more consistent results if you feel it's necessary.

              Re: The Orde r of St.Asaph- 3rd Oct 2016

Thanks Ant for your considered comments. I agree that the "blessing" photo, I did not make any adjustments and hence the warmer tone. With the others it was actually a very difficult exposure problem as there was sunlight streaming through the stained glass windows both from the back of the church and also from the Altar windows. I did change the WB to see if I could get a better colour balance and found that due to the two light sources within the church- evening sunlight and spirit lighting within the church I found that auto WB gave me the best result which I later adjusted in PP with the dropper.

My only consolation is that everyone who has seen the photos are very happy with the results- especially the candidates, their families and friends.

However, thanks for your comments which I will take on board and keep your points in mind.

Hi Nat, don't know if it's correct way forward but I'd have thought using a fixed WB then adjusting one to correct balance then apply same adjustments to the rest of the images should work. Of course I could be wrong and will happily ceed to more knowledgeable people.

                  Re: The Orde r of St.Asaph- 3rd Oct 2016

Thanks Ant. The problem I had was to decide on which WB to fix on as I had two light sources- daylight & tungsten. I am OK with one light source either in the daylight hours or later at night, say at 7.30pm; but at 6pm, on a bright sunny day, it was somewhat dodgy. So I let auto WB decide & worked from there. I have posted here one pic of the choir practicing before the service and you can see the sunlight streaming through.

Tricky lighting indeed. If you used say daylight (caution naughty word coming up) and shot RAW you could easily change the WB to see which works.

I can appreciate why auto WB might seem a good idea but it did seem the WB was quite variable and perhaps the underexposure in some is making the WB seem a bit worse than it is. Of course this is only really evident when a few of the images are seen together.

I'm guessing there are no easy answers to these type of situations.

I think in the end, the way I did the shoot has got the recipients & others very happy indeed. Infact I have been asked for copies- prints, which I have done and sent them.

P.S since I took these pics in RAW as well, I can take a look with your comments in mind.

in Camera Raw in Photoshop, if you have several photos with the same light source you can correct them all at the same time. (You might already be doing this of course.)

Thanks for looking. I agree with you Emyr but on this occasion the light source was never consistent until about 7pm, by which time the service and presentation was finished.
