    The Golden Temple, Japan

Not been about much lately as work has been keeping me busy. To that end I spent 8 days in Japan last week showing customers how to have a good time and of course to see the production facilities we have out there.

I couldn't really take my 'proper' gear so splashed on out a Canon G9X. After reading reviews it seemed a good choice to me. Anyway, I rattled off a few shots, got them home and have to say I'm very disappointed with the quality. Yes I know it has a very small censor in comparison and low light would mean noisy shots but, even it good light the noise is evident and the sharpness very poor. I shall be sending it back for a refund.

For all that, here is one shot that I'm okay with. An iconic temple in Kyoto. Taken around midday so the light is pretty harsh. It's needed a lot of fiddling in LR to get it to this stage. Please don't pixel peep

I clicked through to Flickr and the image looks better there and enlarging is seems there is plenty of detail. Image does look a little flat as if contrast and saturation are a bit low

I remember when I saw this on FB it looked flat and assumed it was a phone shot or just a direct upload but I do agree with Ant and even on flickr doesn't really pop out - still cracking shot just needs a bit of TLC

Cheers Ian. As I said , the camera hasn't performed as I hoped it would. The phrase 'polishing a turd' springs to mind lol

                  Re: The Golden Temple, Japan

I feel your disappointment That's a great scene with good composition that should have yielded a wonderful photograph yet it does fall short and, unless something in processing has gone awry, it can only be a fault with the camera. To have bought it especially to record such once-in-a-lifetime vistas is damned annoying and I'm sure that's not the performance Canon intended. True something from the M series would deliver better results but, unlike the G series (including my G10) it wouldn't be as easy to pop into a pocket.

                  Cheers,
                  John

I have always liked the G series and I have got the G15 which I take with me,always as a standby. Not used much but whenever I have used it, it delivers good results. Attached is a picture taken without flash.

One of the reasons to buy it was its ability to shoot RAW. And with a short zoom range I thought the lens would be sharp all over, but no. Hey no. I'm seriously tempted to opt for an Olympus Pen now. Please don't hate me lol

I could be processing but usually my treatments work out well. Perhaps I'll show the unfettered version and get your take on it
