    24-70 or new 24-105?

I have a 'mark 1' 24-105. I am thinking of getting a 100-400 II (which is on the list of recommended lenses for the 5DS - which I don't have...but maybe...).

My current 24-105 is not on that list (I am not that surprised), and I don't know if it is too early to see if the new one will go on that list.

My quandary is..should I replace the 24-105 mark I with the II, or (given that I will then have coverage from 100 up) swap the current 24-105 for a 24-70 f4 (which is on the Canon 'approved for 5DS list)?

    Thoughts welcome

I recently sold my 24-70 and 70-200 (both f/2.8, Mk I) in a general switch to primes. However I am thinking of getting the 24-105 II as a single-lens walkabout whilst keeping the primes for more specific work. Personally, my vote would be 24-105 II rather than 24-70 f/4 because it has a greater range and (possibly) might have better optical performance due to being a new design. The (claimed) 4-stop IS is also a factor for me due to unsteady hands.

I'm at the same point and waiting for the Mk II before I buy the 5DIV - but I'm not sure whether to get the 24-70 2.8 or the new 24-105. One side of me thinks its a newer lens so in theory better, but the 24-70 is such a good lens and being a 2.8 it could still outshine the new 24-105

Anyone have any views on that also

I'm sure the new 24-105 will be an improvement over it's predecessor - however, it's price will be much higher. It will be perfect as a general walkabout lens on a full frame camera (I never liked it on my crop bodies due to the lack of wideness on them). The one thing I like about the newer version is the 10 "rounded" aperture blades, making that bokeh a bit more dreamy.

To be succinct - just buy it, you would not regret it. I pondered over whether to sell mine and go the prime route (24/35/50), but it's too good to let go.

            Re: 24-70 or new 24-105?

well the 24-70 F4 doesn't have IS does it.....otherwise its a choice of a stop faster of the f2.8 versions or the IS of the 24-105 versions. Four stop IS makes the 24-105 more usable......but if you need better shallow dof control then the 2.8 is better.
The latest MK of any lens gives you future proofing.....meanwhile Im keeping my head in the sand with old F4s....but some nice primes.
( Guess Ill let temptation get to me at the 5DMK V iteration as Ive only had a MKIII for 2 years).

but its only one stop faster.....not that great in shallow dof terms......get a 50f1.2L.....fabulous!!!

well the 24-70 F4 doesn't have IS does it.
                Yes it does

I'd wait until the 24 - 105 has been out for a while and see what people have to say about it. Never be among the first to buy something new, let others find the good and bad points, particularly since you don't have the 5DS yet.

I would personally find it very difficult to change my present 24-105 as it performs so well- a tried and tested lens for me.

Personally I wouldn't get a 24-70 F4. In your situation i'd probably go for the new 24-105 as optically I think it will be better and is a good walk around on a FF. The big downside is it's going to be expensive, just a matter of how expensive. The 24-70 2.8 (new one) is expensive and heavy but fast it also takes 82mm filters. So I guess I'd see where it lies cost wise wrt the new 24-105. Personally I've not really missed the 24-105 although I guess it was convenient.

Unless there are currency swings, I'm expecting it to be in the £950-1150 region depending on supplier ...

I'm thinking the upper end of your range with little difference in supplier, for a few months anyway.

Using a promo code with a UK supplier I stopped just one click short of the final pay point at £1,020 this afternoon. Obviously pre-order but no reason to assume the order would not have been accepted. Not a grey import supplier.

DXOMark review of 24-105 II published with comparisons against other options. Mk II not the upgrade which was hoped for although still a decent lens. Mk I owners would probably see little benefit in Mk II.
