    Polarising filter

    Hi guys,

Can anyone one recommend a good polarising filter, don't want to spend a fortune but prepared to pay for something good. Main lens it would be used on is an EF-S 10-22mm.

    Thanks.

I am sure that a Hoya brand will do you good. I use the same brand for two other lenses of mine.

I use Marumi which came out very high on a comparative test of about 20 brands a few years ago.
However, I'd be wary about using any polariser at the wider angle of that lens. You are likely to get very uneven darkening of the sky because of the wide area covered. That's nothing to do with the make of polariser, just a fact of life and physics.

          Re: Polarising filter

As Richard said, a Polarising filter on a 10-22 will give uneven darkening of the sky. This is from experience and as a result of the uneven darkening of the sky I no longer use a polarising filter on a wide angle lens. The uneven darkening looks like a series of dark scallop shapes giving the sky a raised "cafe curtain" appearance.

            Re: Polarising filter

Was a topic of another thread a while ago. I use a Hoya circular polariser on my 16-35 on 5D3 (should have similar FOV) and haven't seen this problem. I know it is a problem that is well known. Whether a Hoya would be OK on a crop sensor/10-20 would need some testing.

Thanks guys, just ordered a Hoya Pro 1 Digital Filter for £43.00 which seemed a good deal.

                Re: Polarising filter

Whilst recommending the Hoya brand, I will certainly not use a polariser on a wide angle lens. I have got a polariser for my 24-105mm and the 70-300mm lens but seldom use them.

Hope it works OK. Mine is permanently attached to my 16-35. All my shots from Skye I posted recently using this lens will be with the polariser, sometimes rotated to give no/minimal effect.

I doubt if you get clear blue sky across the horizon very often on Skye, but I may be doing the island a disservice

Quite a lot more than you might imagine but to be honest tend not to shoot then as when sky is clear it's not very interesting. Did post some images from Wiltshire that had clear skies in previous discussion.
