    Canon price increases

I'd been watching prices in the UK for the EF100 F2.8L for a while and regretted not pulling the trigger when Jessops had it with a 10% discount over the weekend of 15/16 October at £593.

It subsequently went back up to £659 with other sellers listing it at £699.

Today I've noticed that at most well known outlets; WEX, Jessops, Calumet etc it's jumped to £899! Only one (non-photographic retailer) John Lewis still has it at £659.

So what's going on? A bit suspicious that they all put their prices up identically at the same time I wondered if this was due to Canon increasing prices or sellers increasing them up before 'Black Friday' in order to claim massive savings then.

I then contacted a couple of sites & price increases by Canon were blamed. When I mentioned there were sellers still selling it for £659 one suggested either last of their old stock or grey imports. Old stock may be the case but call me cynical but odd how numerous sellers all run out of old stock on the exact same day ;)

However further checks show that the 24-70 F2.8L II has jumped around £300 to £1999 at several sites as has the 100-400.

Looks like if you're after that new lens, better get in quick ...

I have also been following a couple of lenses over the last month or so and it's grim! Just waiting to see what the next week brings in terms of discounts and zero interest offers ...

Are you talking about the 100 mm F2 macro? If so, there's a simple answer, buy the Sigma 105 mm instead. I read loads of comparative tests and not one of them found the Canon to be any better than the Sigma, which is half the price. The Sigma is so good that Amateur Photographer chose it as the lens they use to measure the resolving power of cameras in their lab tests. Don't believe that Canon must be better because they cost more.

I doubt if prices are going to rise much more as the pound seems to have stabilised. Also there are likely to be quite a few cashback offers after Christmas.

I hate to state the obvious but now is not the time to buy ,with the peak selling period upon us I would wait for either Black Friday ( I still think that's a con) or wait till after xmas when they have cash flow probs .

            Re: Canon price increases

I believe the Canon prices have jumped due to the weakness of the pound, so new stock is going to be a lot more expensive. A lens I was considering went up 20% from yesterday to today as Wex sold out of the older stock, so now I'm not considering it anymore.

Yes think you're right, I've noticed other things jumping up in price too.

i still think it reeks of jumping on the bandwagon ,yes canon have put some prices up but the double whammy of a weak pound v dollar has gone out the window this week ,i.e petrol and diesel have dropped again at tesco and asda ,just put some diesel in at 1.13p a litre.
the best bet with rising rip off prices is simply boycott the goods till they miraculously come back at sale prices

                  Re: Canon price increases

Prices seem to have gone up mainly at the higher end, e.g. cameras over £1,000. Lower end are stable e.g. 80d is still the same list price, but there is also £80 cashback on offer. I suspect they think that people who can afford the more expensive models don't bother so much about price ......

Know what you mean but if Canon are increasing prices across the board, after Christmas there will be more chance that any existing stock will be gone so everyone's likely to be charging the higher prices. Not often prices actually fall ;)

Les it's always going to be a personal circumstances thing .if you haven't bought it already for xyz reason ,then that xyz is still going to be the same when the price goes up or down . And once prices do go up again there's always the chance that importers that have dropped by the wayside will start up again as it will be worth there while again
