Judging by the price of the 200-400 when launched and bearing in mind this is a prime it's going to be out of the reach of most togs

I agree it`s going to be well out of reach for most , including me but what a piece of glass it could be if it does hit the market . I wonder why Canon have never released a 1.7 converter in it`s own right ?

            I also remember seeing this the other day, even more desirable ;

I don`t think that lens is quite so desirable , such a large focal range is sure to have issues , and its a lot slower at the long end .

i thought there was a low end large zoom out on test .for release early next year to compete with the sigma/tamron zooms

I still think 400mm is too short for Wildlife, 500mm if a better option.

I avoid that place like the plague, they sold me a 2 grand plus TV delivered it, opened the box upside down so everything bar the TV fell out, I watched him look at the broken support bracket for the stand and then try to fit it, at which point they and the TV were ejected from my home..... Now the kicker, they agreed to replace the TV with another one and they refunded the cost of the TV to my account and then took the same amount back out of it to pay for the replacement.. So as it takes days to credit a repayment back into my account, they in effect had £5 plus K out of my account at once...... I will never use them again because of that.

Crank in that 1.7 converter and you got 680mm possibly at f5.6 if not f4 on a full frame body . Though I agree for small birds 400mm is probably pushing it on a full frame body .

                      Re: Wildlife toggers dream lens

I understand that, but with any prime, the image suffers slightly when you use converters, simply because they are integral to the lens I cannot see anything different in that aspect, bar the fact you have less to carry and would be a quick option for sport photographers etc.

I can do exactly the same on my 500MML, just externally, so I cannot really see the advantage to the average person, and as you can do the same with the existing new EF 400mm f/2.8L as well, I would hate to think how much of a premium will go on the price to do what you can do now externally.

The only real advantage I can see is that the other variants have to be made to work with all models, where this is lens specific, so can be tailored to the lens.

Possibly because it would clash with sales of the x2? but I could see with the relese of it internally, an external variant in the future?

If you already own a 500 or 600 mm prime it`s not such a great deal , although I think it still ends up slightly faster if you compare those lenses with converters fitted ? Am I right to say that a 1.7 only looses one extra stop like the 1.4 ? It`s all minor improvements , but sometimes they make the difference .

Yes, I am lucky to own the 500mm, I did look at the 400mm as it is a 2.8, but the downside to that was it's significant weight increase over the 500 and the lack of reach, I have the 100-400 and was always wanting more reach, that was the thing that put me off it, that and having to lug it around.. gawd knows how much it will weigh with these converters built in.

                            Mk 2 500mm

                            Weight 3.2 kg

                            MK 2 400mm 2.8

                            Weight 3.85 KG

                            200-400 with built in converter

just shy of 8 lbs (3.6kg)

though to be fair my MK1 500mm f4 comes in at

                            Weight 3.87kg

                            but has the added reach.
