Wisdom of switching on and off the computer.

I am not a computer/IT literate person. I have been in the habit of putting my computer in the "sleep" mode when I have finished and then have difficulty in "re-starting/waking up" my computer. What do the experienced computer members do with their computers once it is switched on. I use a desk top computer- HP Pvailion with a Flatron (22") monitor.

    Many thanks.

Unless the computer is not going to be used for at least a week or more I simply allow it to enter sleep mode automatically. Wake up is simply a key press or mouse move or brief press of power button depending on which computer is involved.

Unless I have a specific reason I generally do not shutdown any computer.

I use a MacBook Pro and don't bother with the power switch thing as sleep and resume works fine.

In the past I've found some computers don't seem to like hibernating. In the past I've left computers on 24/7 and left them running for 2-3 years, just had the screen turn off after a time. These days turn off at the end of the day and don't have any issues.

I usually switch my PC off at night, but if I forget and it goes into hibernation, a push of the power button wakes it up. If it's only the screen that goes off, a click of the mouse is enough. It might be worth checking your power settings under "Settings". If you have Windows 10, that's just above the "Power" button at the bottom left when you click the Windows icon.

Thanks for all your advice/comments. I have got Windows Vista, and I have stopped putting it on "sleep" mode but to keep it running all day until I go to bed at night,. I find that the computer, after sometime does go into hibernation and I can easily wake it up by pressing any key.I was wondering whether I should continue with this practice i.e let it hibernate after some time, without actually putting it into "sleep" mode.

Vista wasn't best at managing resources so not surprised you have issues now and then. To be honest I don't bother with any of the sleep/hibernation stuff. Once I turn on it stays on till end of day, I just turn monitor off when I'm not using it for a period of time.

Only option I'd use, if any, is to have the screen automatically power off.

There's some that say leave it on stand by all the time others say switching it on and off causes problems due to wear and tear ,personally I leave mine on most of the time ,but switch it off to cool down every week or so

Thanks folk for your good advice. I will switch it off at night, before I go to bed.

I leave mine on all the time, it just goes into sleep mode. Easy to wake up by pressing any key.

You should shut down as even in hibernate or sleep mode the Hard drive doesn't always shut down and will keep spinning, which can lead to premature failure. as an aside some updates will not install properly until a restart is complete.

I have been shutting mine down for years with no ill effects and using an SSD it boots up in about 25 seconds and is ready to use

I now shut down mine only at nights before I go to bed. Seems to be working OK.
