    Re: backwards or forwards

I been looking and been tempted at that 1DMKlV since you brought this up Jeff , that 1.3 sensor does seem to offer the best of both worlds to wildlife photographers , but I wonder with the later cameras , and very much so including your 80D , I think the AF might be a bit lacking now . I notice a considerable difference in my 5Dmklll to my 7D , the 5D just seems to work much better .

      Re: backwards or forwards

Before I push the button on a deal I have had a play with the 80D today and it seems to have been front focussing slightly ,I have done all the tests tonight and come up with a +8 setting ,will have a test tomorrow in daylight and see if that had been the problem ,I can't knock the 80D for high ISO work ,but my shots have always seemed slightly soft .obviously you don't see what I do as the shots have been worked on before posting .if I can emulate the sharpness of the 1D3 then it will go on a back burner .updates tomoz
Anyway blame Steve dawsey as he started it LOL

Is that with your Sigma at 600mm? Plus 8 might well be significant.

Sorry, just meant in the amount of adjustment. Did look at the MA for my Sigma at 600 on my 5D3 and that only gave +2 which I thought was so little not to have been noticeable.

Will try it out in practise once the sun comes up .sometimes what looks good in theory doesn't work in practise ,but something's not quiet right

                Re: backwards or forwards

Just wanted to give one more recommendation for the 1D MkIV. I've had mine for a while now and it's still an excellent camera. The quality of the image files are superb, better than either the 5D MkII I had previously and my current 5D MkIII. They just seem more natural, less digital, if that makes sense? The best way to describe them are 'film like'. As for it's AF system possibly lacking compared to recent high end models, I wouldn't worry about that as it's still an extremely capable action camera.

They do seem to be holding a decent price on the second hand market, but that just tells me it's still a popular camera with a good demand for well looked after examples.

                  Re: backwards or forwards

Although I would have taken that course. A few weeks ago ,the micro adjust work I did over xmas on the 80D has paid dividends ,so unless anything else changes I will be sticking with that for now ,the high ISO use ,and dynamic range edge it for me

You helped advise me about the 1d and it's benefits, my 1div is without doubt better at doing the job than anything I've had before. I will be adding lenses and getting rid of lenses, but the 1div will remain until it expires. I still use my old 550d as well, but not very often despite the weight of the 1div.

Interesting reading this - as you saw on another thread, I have a relatively new 80d as well. I found moving from BBF improved the AF a decent amount - but would be interested if anyone has tried micro adjustment when paired with a 100-400L, with of without the extender, and also how to easily test it.

The best and most simple test is to set up three AA batteries on a flat surface in the garden ,set up in a row at a angle like this \ top ,middle ,bottom a few inches apart . then from around twenty feet away aiming at the centre battery should establish very quickly once viewed on computer whether or not you have a front or back focus problem .

If the writing on the middle aiming point one is clear and sharp your spot on if it's better on the front or rear ones then it's either front or back focussing ,it's a crude method but extremely easy to set up and verify results quickly and easily .best done with camera / lens on tripod ,monopod, bean bag to ensure your not the problem ,centre point must be dead on middle battery so a few shots is best to check properly
