    Charging in the bush.

    My lady wife & I are planning a safari in Botswana in late Spring. The trip includes 10 days in camps in the bush with no electricity. Because we'll be using light aircraft for some of the hopping between camps there is a severe luggage weight restriction - 20kg including hand luggage & cameras.

    I have been told (still checking) that there is a facility to charge mobile phones in the jeeps - I assume a USB style port (I'm checking on this). But this won't do to charge the batteries of my 7DII (LP-E6N) in the Canon charger I normally use.

    Does anyone know of/has anyone used a charger for the LP6EN which can be powered from a USB port?

    I realise I could buy a battery pack and a stack of AA batteries, but we're back to the weight issue.

    Any feedback, much appreciated. Thanks.

      Seem to recall seeing USB chargers on Amazon. Might be worth checking.

          Russell I have one of these LINK that includes a 12 volt car charger lead, not USB. It came supplied with different plates for different battery types and charges two batteries simultaneously.

            Re: Charging in the bush.

            Thanks for the feedback everyone. Since posting I've discovered that Canon offer a charger driven from a car socket (CBC-E6) - for a mere £249.99! Though you can get it a lot cheaper, I don't think I'll be picking up one of those.

            I'll look into your suggestions, but clearly the key is to understand what sort of power socket is available.

            Thanks again.

                It's an idea David, but with an 18cm square footprint, I don't see me lugging it around on a safari. Thanks for the thought.

                    Hello Russell;

                    I had a similar requirement last year, and bought a Bestek 150W 12v car power inverter. Plugs into a standard 12v round outlet and accepts a 3-pin plug and has 2x USB Ports. Lightweight and works a treat, if a little slow. Needs a full 3 hours to re-charge a battery and won't run if the engine is off. Worth a look. As long as nobody else needs similar power supply you should be OK.

                    Good luck and enjoy Botswana!
                    Cheers;
                    Lee

                      You're right David there is a Ring MP120 Mini inverter too, though I can't find it's size described anywhere.

                      The Bestek 150W 12v car power inverter looks interesting too (thanks Lee). I'm now waiting for the agent to tell me what sort of socket I'll be plugging it into.

                        Re: Charging in the bush.

                        I spent a month living out of a canoe in the Canadian wilderness and charged my 7D2 using a Cam Caddy 2, this will charge almost any camera battery from a USB. I had no access to power so attached it to the Freeloader isis battery pack they sell that comes with a small solar panel built in. This was boosted by adding the Freeloader Supercharger for extra power. As long as there was enough sun light to cast a shadow I could regenerate batteries. I could even skip the storage part and run the Cam Caddy straight of the additional supercharger, though it was more practical for me to harvest the sunlight during the day and transfer it to my batteries in the dark over night. This system and several spare batteries to allow for cloudy days kept me well charged.

                          Look at Nitecore, they've just released a Canon USB charger. They have a good reputation for their other chargers

                            Re: Charging in the bush.

                            I go to Kenya quite frequently - twice a year. Most safari vehicles have inverters in them with a bank of 13 amp sockets that you can plug battery chargers into while you are driving in the bush. A lot of the camps do have charging facilities although it may be only by solar power.
                            I have never had any problems whatsoever with charging equipment while in the camps or travelling in vehicles.
                            Hope this is of some help
