Total solar eclipse in USA, August 21 2017

    Hi folks,

I'm going over the pond for the total solar this year and was wondering if anyone has any experience of trying to shoot one without a 'scope? I'll have a tripod plus my 7D and a 100-400 zoom. Any suggestions about filters? Any comments/suggestions most welcome - TIA. Martin Henderson

          Sounds like a great trip.
reminds me of the one we had in the uk ages ago...I burnt out the CCD on my canon video camera by leaving it filming on a tripod.....everything I videod had a distinct crescent in the background from then on. Beware if you use live view.

Live view must be used as looking directly at the sun through the viewfinder is very dangerous.

It sounds like a great trip, hopefully you won't get the overcast/cloud conditions we have in the UK everytime there is a significant astronomical event.

In recent years I used Baader Astrosolar Safety Film for solar events https://www.firstlightoptics.com/sol...ilm-nd-50.html. Lots of suppliers but the price ia around £20 per sheet.

I cut out a suitably sized square, Blue Peter it (double sided sticky tape) to a wide adapter ring with a suitable thread for my lens (I use a ring designed to take a ring flash), then trim the edges.

I always discard after each shoot - just in case of any tears or other damage - but you can get 4 to 6 filters from an A4 sheet so it's not that expensive.

Here it is on my 7dII:

If you've a square filter holder you could make one to slide in with the film that Russell mentioned.

That's what I did for eclipse at Faroe

Then using double sided tape attach the film
