    Computer upgrade to Windows 10

I have now upgraded to W10 but am struggling to send out e-mails. I can receive e-mails on my e-mail address. I have quite naturally contacted the IT installer to call round today to sort this out. There are also one or two other problems such as loading a disc and to retrieve my old facebook account.

Technological progress is always a set back for me!!!!!!!

Email most likely a configuration setting not quite right. If by loading a disc you mean DVD playback this isn't natively supported in W10 IIRC.

Facebook will be username/password most likely.

Thanks Ant. The IT chap did call round and did the needful re the e-mails. the problem now is that I am unable to download my photoshop elements to my computer. He is calling around on Friday to take a look. In fact quite a few of my discs are not downloadable as yet.

Yes, it does but there is nothing to download. It was blank.(although when I try it on my old Vista programme, everything is OK). Apart from PSE, even my Samsung printer disc will not download, although my new Canon Pixma printer disc has downloaded. This is a new colour printer which I bought on Monday.

Nat you can go on to Adobe site and search for you version of Elements and download it then enter your product key, I have done this with Elements 11 which I had as a freebie download with a Wacom tablet, and probably your Samsung printer if it's not too old

For your Samsung printer go to their website and check if there is a driver for W10. If so you can download from there.

When the disc is in the drive goto my computer and see if the disc contents show there.

Thanks Ant and Jeff. I did not see anything on the PSE disc when it was in the "my computer"! I did not want to move away from Windows to Mac as I have had Windows all my life!!!!! Same reason I won't change from Canon cameras to another brand!!!!!!!!

In my case, because Macs are very expensive, I have a huge amount of software for PC that I would have to replace at considerable cost, I use specialist applications on PC that aren't available for Mac and I can more easily exchange information with everybody else I know who all use Windows. I've developed a few specialist applications over they years, 95% response has been excellent, 5% negative from people who complain "this won't run on my Mac!!". Look at computer peripheral reviews on Amazon and you'll find that a high percentage of one star negative reviews are because they won't work on Mac.

However, ultimately I reckon it all depends on what you are used to. Like Nat, I've been using Windows for decades, since Windows 3, and am used to it. The familiar always feels better, Mac users will find a Windows PC awkward because the interface is different and vice versa. In the same way, if you have been using Lightroom and Photoshop for years you will probably hate DPP because everything will be different and unfamiliar. I have my own system of storing and indexing all of my files including images, the last thing I would want would be to change over to Lightroom. Keep to what you know and use it effectively is my motto for most things, better than chopping and changing.

Definitely the case that we are happy with the familiar. My friend has a Nikon and I find the menu structure quite bad. He feels same about my Canons.

Always have to laugh at the articles by pro photographers explaining why they changes from Canon to Nikon/Nikon to Canon. When you have a lot invested in a system, lenses, number of bodies, accessories, etc the cost of changing to an amateur would be prohibitive. Whereas a pro probably receives some sponsorship.

Since W7 peripherals seem to work reliably. For most devices I never even put the supplied disc in the PC.

As Richard has said so very well; the known devil is better than the unknown. Many have told me that it is very difficult to use windows 10 etc when I was contemplating this upgrade but after a few trial and errors I find that it is quite easy to use, once you know the new symbols etc. Furthermore I have my good IT chap remotely connected to my computer (until I get the full hang of W10) and it is only a quick phone call to him and he will come on stream to look at any issues. The only problems I now have is to get PSE and the Samsung printer on to the computer. Most probably I will use the route suggested by Alan & Ant and download via the internet web site.

You may find for the printer that just plugging it in and letting Windows 10 look for drivers will be enough. Give it a try, it may just work and if it doesn't, you've lost nothing.
