On a side note can someone explain to me why the street lights look like stars? I didn't use any filters, not even a UV one. Lens used was a Canon 18-55mm that comes with the camera.

Can't explain the technicalities but it's the result of using a small aperture i.e. f22

Certainly a great effect and one that needs exploring some more. Perhaps a better backdrop, above trees or a city skyline

John is correct its the use of a small aperture which causes diffraction.

              Re: Night shot

I would have preferred a very dark sky but it was overcast and orange due to not all of Glasgow having LED street lights yet.
Also quite pleased it picked up the strobe lights on the wings which flashed about once a second.

As others have said, the effect is diffraction and is more obvious at smaller apertures. The number of points on the star is related to the number of diaphragm blades in the lens. Your lens has 6 blades and this results in 6 points. The number of points is not always the same as the number of blades - 5 blades give 10 points for example.

My first one in my early years was a main road car scene.
Well i guess living under the flightpath gave me this idea. Wasn't sure if anyone had done one before.
