Photo shop elements & Windows 10 upgrade

I do not know whether this is the right place to say this; however I thought I would mention it here. All members who are thinking of upgrading their computer systems must keep in kind to make sure that the upgrade is compatible with their old discs and similar. I have been using PSE 8 for quite a good few years without any problems for my kind editing work. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and found that I could not download PSE 8 as it was not supported by W10. Hence at some extra cost to myself, I have bought PSE 15 which is compatible with W10. I will collect this shortly from Currys/PC world as I need the editing software on tap for the kind of pictures I take, apart from Wildlife.

I agree Jeff.Yes, the way of the world- the so called hidden costs. Have got a big concert tonight which I am covering and hence I need PSE to edit the pictures before they are downloaded on to the concert sites.

It's not just these days it has always been the case that a change/upgrade of OS may lead to software/hardware incompatibility.

I remember years ago when I use to build gaming machines for my son, I built him a new machine with a latest generation processor and it was fantastic. However one of his favourite games was unplayable as it ran so fast. I wrote a small routine to reduce the clock speed of the processor but some aspects were still unplayable.

Yes, Nat. And I find this particularly prevalent on Macs, where a new OS is offered for free every year or so. My strategy is to never upgrade until at least the first revision whilst the major bugs are ironed out, and then only when I'm sure my key software will run. I am now stuck at one upgrade behind because I know PSE 11 will fall over on Mac OS Sierra. Which is fine, because for my use the advantages of OS upgrades tend to be minimal for as long as security patches etc continue to be provided.
And of course it isn't in Adobe's interest to give me a patch to get PSE 11 to work because they want me to go out and buy PSE 15.

Thanks Alex & Ant. I have just picked up PSE 15 and will install it soon. At my vintage years, every IT improvement is a "backward" step for me till I get the hang of it. Can't depend on my children and grand children as they too have got their own life to lead; although they will help but not IMMEDIATELY when I want to be up and running!!

When you have time you'll have to look at the features in PSE 15. There are a considerable number of improvements and new features compared to your old version.

Re: Photo shop elements & Windows 10 upgrade

I have also downloaded PSE 15 to my computer. The problem I have now is how to get at my file for pictures. With PSE 8 I could click on file and I would get all my files from which I could click on pictures and I'd get all my pictures file. I then had to click on the relevant file for me to get all my photos I needed for editing. With PSE 15 I am unable to get at my files for a start- too many features I believe.

Any help will be much appreciated.

                  Nat

What is worrying , is will all the newer updated versions of software open files from older cameras ? I doubt it . Already some of Canons own free software will not open files from my 60D and 400D .

That's a very valid concern ... one solution is to convert to DNG or TIFF-16.

Which free software do you mean? New versions of DPP4 and Picture Style Editor which cover older cameras are now available. My 30D is said to be covered, although I haven't tried it yet.

The latest version of DPP4 (4.5.20) appears to support virtually all cameras, as far back as the 20D, whereas before one had to use DPP3 for older models.
