    Canon 50 - 1000

    Did anybody see the TV programme about wildlife in northern Thailand last night? It was also shown earlier in the week. There was a guy sitting in a hide in a tree trying to film tigers. He had a massive film camera to which was attached a lens to match and on the lens was clearly written "Canon 50 - 1000". Out of interest I did a search for the lens on the internet. Apparently"The lens is designed for use on cinema cameras with Super 35 sized sensors and is suitable for 4K acquisition." However, it does have an EF fitting. By the way, it also comes with an inbuilt 1.5x converter to give a maximum 1500 mm..
    Fancy one? SRP is $78,000 but fortunately it is on offer for a mere $70,200 with at least one dealer. Better do some weight training though as it weighs in at 14.5 lbs, while the "tripod" needed is equally enormous, more like a set of scaffolding.

    Did not see the show, and it's not comparable, but I once spoked to a FOM (Formula One Management) HD camera operator;

    and he explained to me that his camera/lens/tripod gear was worth approximately 250,000.00$usd

    You can see some pricing information for Cinema series and DIGISUPER here:

    Note that that some of the lens are non-cancelable and non-returnable, and if I remember well, prices can be adapted to customer!

      Small fry

      If you have an extra $45,000 lying around, you might still be able to purchase the Canon 5200mm f/14 lens that was listed on eBay last month. It ended on

        I also spotted a 50-1000 lens on a wildlife programme recently, but I know I didn't watch the Thailand one so I think it must have been the one about Yosemite. Obviously common, these lenses, even at $70+k!

          Saw it again on the Yellowstone programmes. The guy was filming the wolves.

          One of the other photographers had a long white Canon telephoto, but it was mounted on a 60D (I could easily read it). The filming was in 2016 and so it shows that not all pros feel the need to always update their equipment with the latest, "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

              Kinda puts my 200-400 to shame lol.

              Most of these guys (and girls) have the kit from the TV dept on semi permanent loan. You have seen the 'olympic store room' photo's. . . .

                should be compatible with APS-C bodies ... but if you can afford one of those then you would be able to buy a C camera body too, I imagine. There is an interesting video on Canon's web site showing off this CN20x50 lens.
