    Re: Black and Gold

two work and two dont for me

The first works very well with just the right balance between the subject and the dark background but I would probably have cloned out the stray bit in the bottom right corner. The second doesn't have that balance

No 3 is excellent with the clump of leaves but would clone the stray bits of oof branches which distract a bit. the last one, too busy background and some of the main leaves are blown

Not a subject I would think of photography so on thinking out of the box Brian. I feel that Stan's critique is spot on, so I can only echo what he stated

the problem is that when you post a selection of images in one thread the defects in some become more obvious than if you just had one image at a time. There is of course no rule on the forum to say you should only post a single image and many members do it but for me, I prefer just to post one or sometimes two in a thread to get feedback on a specific image before posting or adding another

Fascinating set. Brian, for me, #1 doesn't quite work, it is too far away to see the beauty of the detail so just looks to me like a bunch of dead leaves, sorry. The second is a great improvement, partly because it is unusual and makes me think of a 'microscope' image of cells or some such. #3 is best of the bunch for me, I really love how the leaf veins are picked out in white. The last is not quite as good because of the background and the blown bits.

Thanks Alex...I'll revisit these and tidy them up..
I was undecided about the last one....its just the leaf on the right really does look like its made of solid gold....at least it does to me...but thats probably the only qualification for this shot.
I'm struggling firstly....to get the right exposure without blowing highlights....and focus which is very tough when the plants move in the wind even if only slightly.

Thanks again for your constructive comments.

                      Thanks Alex,

when I dragged and dropped it into Flickr via LR the new one replaced the old version....hence the original disappeared...Ill have to rename in future.
