    Thinking ahead

As most know I use a 80d with the sigma 150.600 sport ,it's a nice handy rig and does me well ,now with spring around the corner I,m thinking about my other lenses especially the 100mm macro ,I really hate changing lenses as invariably something comes along mid change .so another camera is the obvious answer ,my lad has offered me his eos.m with 18.55mm lens for £70 I know this is a good buy ,and I will need the adaptor to couple to ef... ef.s lenses ,but I think this could be a good way to to get my macro shots without to much extra weight penalty .
    Unless someone knows different .??

Jeff, I am no expert in this field but I think you will find the EOS- M (or even the 100D) too small for your large hands. I sold my 100D (similar in size to the EOS-M) as I found it too small to hold with my larger 70-300mm L lens and thats why I bought the 760D.

      Re: Thinking ahead

Personally, I'd never consider using a mirrorless camera for macro. Getting spot on focus is essential and the EOS M had a reputation for being very slow to focus, especially with the adapter.
For me, the best way to focus for macro is bbf to get more or less in focus then take your finger off and move the camera for precision. Always with single point for the initial a/f.
I'd rather use an older used SLR than mirrorless.

        Re: Thinking ahead

i now realise this myself having done a bit of reading up on the subject .and a lot of comments suggest the i.s lens to .mine isn't .

i think i will probably go for it though based on its ability to shoot RAW and the excellent lens supplied with it .its a give away at that price in virtually as new condition .

the other thing i have noticed in my google searches is a mention of it being far better in manual focus ,which for the limited macro i will do would be sufficient ,it might even be good enough with the standard 18-55is lens on it to as that focusses down to around 8 inches . if i went down the path of yet another DSLR it would mean having to do a lot of knee bending etc to get close to subjects in the viewfinder and i fear i'm getting to old and rickety for that ,a quick raise the camera and grab a shot of a butterfly or dragon/damsel fly is good enough these days . plus other routes of new camera etc will be out of my pension fund limits

My reading was the EosM was slow to focus in auto, but I do not know about manual. I must admit I fancy one, as for being small in your hands etc, would you not tend to use it on a tripod? They also do a macro lens for it I believe with a built in macro flash surrounding the element, know doubt costing the earth. At £70 for the M it is a bargain, bodies go for 4x that.

            Re: Thinking ahead

I don't really consider butterflies and dragonflies as true macro subjects. My preference is to keep a good distance and use a telephoto. I use the 200 mm F2.8L with the Kenko 1.4 TC. That gives a 280 mm lens, equivalent to almost 450 mm on the 80D. Even though the closest focus is still 1.2 metres, I can fill the frame with a butterfly or dragonfly from that distance without scaring them off. And without bending my knees

I have decided that at the price and condition I simply cannot refuse it ,there are some interesting lenses available in there range to .i have a few normal ef. Ef.s lenses already and a couple of manual focus film era m42 lenses fitted with adaptors .so the swoppability factor is there without the worry of getting dust on my main dslr sensor
I will either couple it with monopod or utilise my bendy mini tripod and for hand holding I have a couple of go pro grips that can be adapted .

update on this ,i bought the camera in the week ,and yesterday ordered a meike ef-to ef-m adaptor ,on amazon for the princely sum of £23 ,it arrived this evening to late to try it in the garden ,but so far using it indoors the combo is far better than i thought with my canon macro lens on it auto focusses quickly and accurately .
at this moment in time it looks like i have made the right choice based on my original criteria of a lightweight body with my macro lens for summer use .pics to follow once taken
