    Canon wireless printer!

Recently, I bought a Canon MG 2950S wireless printer- to be compatible with my Windows 10. I now find that very often when I try to print something, I get the message stating that the printer is "offline" although the blue wireless symbol is quite stable and I know that I am "on line"! On an infrequent basis the printer will print the document/photo.

I am therefore considering buying a USB Printer to Computer cable and attaching the same to the printer & my computer so that I am sure that I can print what I want to print without any problem.

I will be very grateful for any advice from the more experienced IT/Computer members.

    Many thanks

    Nat

I share your frustration! My WiFi Canon MX410 seems to be anything but, I just use the cable that came with the printer. Maybe a search on Amazon/Ebay may find a cable for your printer.

    Is this any help https://www.amazon.co.uk/Printer-Cab.../dp/B004ZEVJUM

The same is true of the MG3550...in fact it sometimes claims that its not connected even with the USB cable connected....so have to take it out and put it back in each time. I keep the PRO-10 (used for photos) connected by cable and that seems reliable.

Must be one of the most unreliable ways to connect a printer. Without doubt use a cable. If you need in a hurry don't go to PCWorld as they will charge you an arm and a leg.
Tesco quite cheap. Any A to B should do, make sure you get one long enough for you use. Generally 1.8m though longer/shorter are available.

I can see the benefits of connecting with a cable provided it can be situated close enough. But what about AirPrint (assuming this model has that of course) or others on the same internal network?
I use the MG7550 wirelessly and it performs brilliantly. Yes at times it can be a little grumpy but nothing an off and on won't resolve.

I use the MG6250 with no problems. I leave my printer on all the time and when i go to use it it goes ththrough the startup cycle and then prints.

download the latest driver for the printer as well

I have a MG5250 for general printing. It is set up wirelessly next to my iMac and my wife also connects wirelessly from her laptop downstairs. The only time we have a problem, is it is sometimes slow due to weak broadband signal. The phone lines around our way are so bad that we have to use one one of the rural wireless broadband systems.

I take your points guys and thank you. I have now gone in for a cable from Amazon. Yes, you are right Ant. PC world charges approx £14.95 for the cable whereas I am getting it for £4.95!!!!!

All I can say is that I have recently changed from HP photosmart to an Epsom XP960 much superior printer and does A3 as well and no problems with wireless connection and Airprint.

I have been advised that with Wi FI printers one should keep them switched on all the time and not to turn the machine off. I will try this and see how far this works for me- until my cable arrives!

I do just the opposite and turn the printer on and off as needed and as I said, it's never been a problem despite having an iMac and a windows 10 machine wirelessly connected to it.

In general I would leave an inkjet printer powered on - because it will usually perform a nozzle clean at each power on which will consume ink.

Additionally I would tend to leave any service device ( such as a printer ) which does not have a static IP address powered on.

No golden rules here - to each their own.

Leaving the printer powered will, I presume, not add to my electricity consumption?
