Back Button focussing on EOS 5D Mark III

Tried back button metering and focus set up as per manual but it reverts back to the old setting of half press shutter button. Obviously I am not doing it right.

Can you please guide me the correct way of doing it.

    Thanks

    Jai.

Just checking which button are you pressing the AF-on or the one with a star *.

You need to define a rear button (or two, in my case) to do AF and the shutter button not to (I use it for AE lock).
