Whilst still looking for an f2.8 lens in my budget that doesn't look like it's been kicked around a gravel car park, I picked up a nice pair of 1.4 and 2 times convertors, both mk ii from fleabay for a reasonable £300. Mainly used them on my 100-400 mk i and have to say I'm very impressed with some of the results. In dark areas some of the results are rather grainy and getting used to manually focussing with the 2 times is an art in it's self. However as a low weight easily hand held option, the extenders do a pretty good job on a limited budget. The problems I had with the kenko 1.4 don't appear with the canons, so a lesson learnt there, not all equipment mixes.
I am looking forward to getting on the hills with a hand held 580-800 set up and see what the results are like, I'll post some images on my return, but waiting for a small operation, so it could be a few weeks yet.
