    Canon extenders

Whilst still looking for an f2.8 lens in my budget that doesn't look like it's been kicked around a gravel car park, I picked up a nice pair of 1.4 and 2 times convertors, both mk ii from fleabay for a reasonable £300. Mainly used them on my 100-400 mk i and have to say I'm very impressed with some of the results. In dark areas some of the results are rather grainy and getting used to manually focussing with the 2 times is an art in it's self. However as a low weight easily hand held option, the extenders do a pretty good job on a limited budget. The problems I had with the kenko 1.4 don't appear with the canons, so a lesson learnt there, not all equipment mixes.
I am looking forward to getting on the hills with a hand held 580-800 set up and see what the results are like, I'll post some images on my return, but waiting for a small operation, so it could be a few weeks yet.

I know what you mean about the weather. I bought myself a Tamron 150-600mm lens and i have a cheap 2x teleconverter and I haven't been out with it yet.
Scotland + February = Stay in and watch the telly.

A 2x convertor will not a.f with that lens ,there's no canon camera that will either .rather pointless the only ones that might a.f with 1.4 tc and that lens are the 7d2 ,80D or some of the 1D series

I find i use manual focus more than AF anyhoo. Gives me something else to play around with.

There is what looks to be a nice 300 2.8 for sale on the forum . Though I rarely take the 2x off my 300 , the combination is not as sharp as I would like it to be , the 1.4 will likely offer better results , I hope to try and use it more this year .

Although it doesn't say so I think you will find the MK 2's are stackable, though expect the quality to deteriorate. My Mk 3's you can't and I don't think the MK 1's will either. though I think the 2 will with the 3..

                Hi Tony,

As I understand it, using a 2X extender would cost you at least 2 f/stops. So using a set up like this what is the best aperture you could hope for?

                Best Regards

This was taken hand held, a bit of a grab shot in less than perfect light

Nice sharp image, not too noisy and again lowish light conditions

Looking at the exif data these were all with the 100-400 mkii and a 1.4 tc ,yes good pics but unless the exif is false it doesn't show any t.c stacking ,I get 850mm with the sigma and 1.4 tc ?

Not got a mark ii Jeff, thought about it, had one in my hand and my credit card in the other, but decided to try and get an f2.8 instead, the extenders are a stop gap, but one I'm quite pleased with.
