Re: Help me make up my mind

I think the best thing to avoid is buying to early ,as I did with the sigma sport ,they now retail for £300 less than I paid ,but that's life .i love mine and after using the wife's 400 L yesterday the sigma is on a par with it and gives extra reach ,a canon 300.mm f2.8 even with a two times convertor will only give 600mm yet with a 1.4 tc I can achieve 840mm ,with frame filling being the name of the game with wildlife I'm happy with my choices

Maybe, I'm not so convinced these days, the Sigma Art lenses for example command high prices used but are rarely available as people like them so much. Popular Canon lenses such as the 24 - 105 F4 are going pretty cheaply because there have been so many sold.

In any case, I never sell or trade in kit, I buy what I need and keep it until it falls to pieces. I've still got my D30 and my film cameras, even my Zenith from the 1970s. It's the same with cars, I drive a 20 year old Vectra which never lets me down and I'll keep it until it's only fit for the scrapheap, you always lose some money trading in, do it often enough and it can really add up. So resale value isn't of significance to me.

Ultimately, all that counts with lenses or anything else is whether the user is happy with the results.

Well said................. well all bar the admitting to being a Vectra owner bit
      Canon 1DX, 50D, EF500 F4.0 L, EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L I , EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II, EF70-200 f/2.8L II, EF180 f3.5L Macro, EF 24-105 f/4L, EF17-40 f/4L, EF2.0X III, EF1.4X III, 430EX II, MR-14EX...

I inherited it from my late father, so wasn't my choice. But I've done 80,000 miles and it's never let me down, passed the last two MOTs without a hitch. It does have lichen and moss growing on it .......... I must admit I do have a big smile on my face every time I pass someone in their shiny new German car waiting at the side of the motorway for the AA/RAC to come

Hard to believe that when the car was made, digital SLRs were still a few years away, how times change.

And I thought I was alone....

I still have my D30 too and a load of film cameras including my original Instamatic. I have sold and traded in kit though but only because I really didn't like it and even then only after a lot of soul searching...

The Sigma 120 - 300 is insanely heavy, weighs more than the 150 - 600 Sport.
In fairness to the Canon 300, it is IS whereas the Sigma is not and the weather proofing is superior, Sigma put all this right in 120-300 sport, but at a cost in the weight department it would seem. As I said I've yet to get one to handle, there's very few on the 2nd hand market yet, so they seem to be rare as hens teeth up here.

Yes, the Sigma 300 F2.8 is a pretty old design in the sense that it came out a bit before they really started to make major improvements. I suspect all their future developments in this area will be with zooms.
