Well, thank you all for your input.

I think I have come to a conclusion.

I will go for the Sigma 150-600 Sport because of its durable build and will work well with the 6d for the time being.

I will add the 80D a little while later (need to save a bit extra) because the layout is very similar to the 6D and similar size (I have small hands) and the balance of its features seem ideal.

That should see me nicely set up for landscape and wildlife.

          (hmmm macro.....)

I would add a little fly into the ointment, have you looked at residual value, the 100-400 does hold the value extremely well, heck my Mk1 version is still worth close to what I paid for it new.... how does the Sigma stack up... might be a thought for future upgrades etc.

Re: Help me make up my mind

I've been a logo snob where cameras and lenses are concerned for years, get what you pay for and all that. Have to say the build quality of the Sigmas is right up there now and their new range has the ability to be upgraded or adjusted using the docking unit, great selling point and that's before you look at the price. However when I compared a Canon 300 f2.8 to a Sigma, the Canon was sharper including using 1.4 and 2 times convertors. Budget will decide, for me it's a straight choice a new Sigma or a second hand Canon, I'm still looking for a decent second hand Canon.

Hardly a fair comparison considering the price of the Canon 300m F2.8 is almost 5 times the Sigma 150 - 600 Sport. You should really compare like for like, but Canon have nothing to compare to the 150 - 600, the nearest is the 100 - 400 F4.5 - 5.6.

You'll be very lucky to get a good condition Canon 300 f2.8 at a reasonable price, either they'll be battered ex pro ones, or from well off amateurs in excellent condition, if the latter the sellers will expect to get something not that far from what they paid in the first place. And there will be plenty of bidders on an auction site, market forces will determine that the price stays high. As Maggie Thatcher said "you can't buck the market".

The Canon brand is a very good selling point as it tends to keep the value of the item high.

Thats my point. The Canon brand holds its value much better than any other third party lenses.

I wasn't comparing it with the zoom Richard, I was comparing it with a 300 Sigma prime. I have also tried to compare with the new 120-300 Sigma sport, but no one round here has one for me to see, I've been to Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Perth and Dundee, no one has one in stock, but if I leave a deposit they'll order one. Fine says I, will I get a full refund if I don't want it/like it, the answer is why I'm still looking for a Canon.

I'm not in a rush, hence using the extenders on the 100-400L mk I. I had to shop around to get my 1D at the right price in the right condition and was fortunate to get exactly what I wanted, I'll bide my time, I know a couple of pro wildlife toggers who have what I'm after, hopefully one of their well looked after ones will come my way.

Re: Help me make up my mind

Well the Sigma 150-600 sport arrived a few days ago and the weather has been awful so no chances to give it real outing.

However I couldn't resist doing a quick and unscientific test between my Canon 24 -105 F4L and the Sigma at full zoom on the 6D for a sharpness comparison.

I processed both raw files with exactly the same settings in Lightroom.

                          Canon @105

                          Sigma @600

                          Canon crop

                          Sigma crop

A bit more of a colourcast with the Sigma but that's easily dealt with in processing so doesn't look too bad to me

Your comparison makes that lens look exceptionally sharp Skyelines . Will look forward to what you produce with it weather pending .

Ah, I see. Still, new the Canon is more than twice the price of the Sigma 300 (i.e. £3200 more), would be disappointing if it wasn't better.

The Sigma 120 - 300 is insanely heavy, weighs more than the 150 - 600 Sport.

Maybe, I'm not so convinced these days, the Sigma Art lenses for example command high prices used but are rarely available as people like them so much. Popular Canon lenses such as the 24 - 105 F4 are going pretty cheaply because there have been so many sold.

In any case, I never sell or trade in kit, I buy what I need and keep it until it falls to pieces. I've still got my D30 and my film cameras, even my Zenith from the 1970s. It's the same with cars, I drive a 20 year old Vectra which never lets me down and I'll keep it until it's only fit for the scrapheap, you always lose some money trading in, do it often enough and it can really add up. So resale value isn't of significance to me.

Ultimately, all that counts with lenses or anything else is whether the user is happy with the results.
