    6D for motorsport

Just bought a used 6D (my first full frame D SLR) and wondered if anyone has used one for motorsport photography ? How did you get on ? At Goodwood tomorrow 17th there is a test day for the upcoming Members meeting so I will be testing it there with the new 70-300 STM and the 100-400 Mk2.

The 6D wasn't really built for speed, max 4.5 fps is quite slow compared to most. Slower fps usually indicates slower a/f. Plus the number of a/f points is only 11, with only the centre one being a cross type. It wouldn't be my first choice for action, I got mine for landscape etc.

Depends on your preferred focusing method; I find the AF using the centre point is as good as any other EOS cameras including my 80D. I tend to use the 80D for air displays only because it gives extra reach but then I still use just the central AF point - it's all I've ever used in the past & works for me.

You'll get some great shots, yes, at 4.5 fps you will miss some action, but you'll also get some great shots, 6d is a very good camera, the best camera for what you are shooting, is the one you have, with a good panning technique, and use of shutter speed, you'll get some sharp photos with some great motion blur, you may need to work a little harder than say, a 7dmk2 at 10fps but I guarantee you will catch some lovely shots

I guess the targets are a bit larger than birds in flight where I found the 6D struggles a little.

I am surprised to note the negative comments about the 6D and motorsport. I have used the 6D for bird in flight photos and they are absolutely fine. Please see this picture.

Technically there is only one slightly negative comment and it's a valid one, the 6d wasn't aimed at action photography, but that doesn't mean you can't use it for that, you can use pretty much any camera in almost any setting... I bought a 7dmk2 as used to shoot a lot of sports, and I was missing the odd shot, but it also takes great photos of anything else I point it at... (as long as there is plenty of light lol)

I agree absolutely, all (Canon DSLR) cameras are excellent and CAN be used for anything. I was merely saying that among my bodies the 6D wouldn't be my first choice for action, the 80D would, the 6D would be my first choice for landscape and portraits, for example.

                        Re: 6D for motorsport

I haven't taken motor sport photos since the 70's when I had a Praktica LTL, 200mm lens and using Kodachrome 64 film.

With manual focus and lever wind on it wasn't exactly sophisticated, however I managed to catch some good pictures, cars on two wheels, and panned shots of F1 cars on the fastest section of the old Brands Hatch GP circuit.

It was down to preparation (knowing where on the circuit the interesting action tended to happen and focussing on the track where the action was likely to happen before the cars arrived and stopping down for depth of field), anticipation (recognising how the cars approached the corner and anticipating what the outcome may be) and quick reflexes to catch the shot.

So on the basis of the above the 6D should be fine.

Welcome to the forums Silverstone, how did you get on?

I would love to see some of your images, the camera is a cracking body and you have an excellent lens in the 100-400 to back it up, I have not tried the 70-300mm so cannot comment on that.

On a side note, I cannot believe the negativity of some members to a new member on his first post introducing himself and his new camera.... if you cannot give useful advice on how to get the best out of his camera in the subject he is going to shoot in his first outing with it, then why run his camera down.
I shoot tons of different subjects with my camera and yes some are not utilizing the body to its best capabilities, but I work around that, and useful advice on how to get the best is far better than... I wouldn't use that mate! Good on those that were helpful

Silverstone, one hopes you are still here and will join in.. we all learn from each other here.
