    Re: 6D for motorsport

As I have mentioned earlier, I am more or less confident that the 6D will give you good motor racing pictures judging from my bird in flight shots posted on this thread. So my advice is "go for it".

      Re: 6D for motorsport

I do not want to enter into any slanging matches, but I see nothing wrong with people having the opinion that, if you have a choice, the 6D is not the best choice for motorsport. (I also wondered how many Herons are capable of 200 mph, but that's probably a different matter).

I have also been considering getting a 6D (might now wait and see if the rumoured 6DII turns up in spring), but I would definitely keep my 70D for some situations (I'm more into aircraft than cars).

Positioning oneself in the correct place (IMHO) will enable one to take pictures of very fast moving subjects. I am not into motor sport but I am sure if I took a place near a "bend" for example will ensble me to capture some action.

          Re: 6D for motorsport

As you can get a 7D2 for about the same price as a 6D I would be inclined to go that route - as I am about to replace my 70D for a 7D2 as I am going birding and motor racing etc

That said I love my 6D for general purpose pictures - the picture quality is excellent!

The original event was on the 17th, I wonder how Silverstone went on with his 6D?

Yes, I do agree with Nat and John, as with all photography I guess, technique is more important than equipment. I'd be happy enough to shoot anything with any of my bodies, just that I'd prefer the 6D for landscape or portrait, and the 80D for action. I like to have a choice which is why I buy more used rather than less new, for the same expenditure.

                  Re: 6D for motorsport

As Silverstone's original post said he had just bought a 6D, I'm not sure why other people are recommending other cameras.. I don't have a 6D so can't be of any real help. I do however have a 5D(3) and a 7D and would always choose the 5D for motorsport, wildlife, landscapes and everything else. You don't need to be on a bend, all you need is to be able to pan, which comes with practice. Not sure how may frames per second the 6D does and wouldn't really care because I always have it set for single shot, even for motorsport and wildlife as I'm not from the spray and pray brigade. Hopefully Siverstone got some good shots but if he didn't, I'm sure it won't be due to the camera and with experience, he will improve.

As mentioned in my signature, I also have got a 760D which I use for wildlife pics as I get a bit of extra reach with my 70-300L plus 1.4 Kenko. The 6D does about 4fps.

                      Re: 6D for motorsport

I also hope Silverstone got some good shots, would be interested to see! I assume from his name here that motorsport is his main interest and that he bought the 6D specifically for that purpose, hence my comments earlier. He did say it's his first full frame DSLR, which left me wondering what he had before, presumably an APS-C model, so will he get better results with the 6D?

I'm not from the spray and pray brigade
I assume that means not using AI Servo and continuous shooting. However, I'm sure that's what professional sports photographers, whose livelihood depends on getting the right pictures, will be using most of the time and I wouldn't like to call them "spray and pray" . In any case, the ability of a camera to shoot at a fast frame rate means that it also focusses faster, no point in shooting at 10 fps if it can't keep the object in focus in between. There's an excellent article in the July to September 2016 magazine (Action Stations, pages 42 - 53) which I felt laid out the issues very clearly.

I don't remember Silverstone mentioning lenses, also very important, some lenses (usually the large aperture expensive ones) are much quicker to focus than others.

                        Re: 6D for motorsport

Silverstone hasn't come back, so we don't know if he was driven away by negative comments regarding his new purchase or whether he would't have returned anyway.
By spray and pray, I mean continuous shooting. For motorsport I do generally use servo focussing but don't (or very rarely) use continuous shooting. As I said I don't have a 6D but I do use a 5D(3) and have no problem with focussing.

I agree with TonyT 100%. I did my best to encourage him with my BIF shots taken with the 6D (that was his question- 6D & Motorsport). Sadly it would appear that some members do not read the thread or the question properly to give a proper comment. I will send him a PM and see what happens.
