    Redhead Smew

Difficult to sex this bird as the females and juveniles are virtually identical , this one has quite a bit of white coming through on the wings so my guess would be a first winter male

Thanks Derek , would have liked it to be a little sharper but it is quite a big crop as the bird was a distance away on the water. Not rare in Britain but the first one I have seen in my neck of the woods

That's a great shot, we had a drake adult near us last week, will have to go and see if it's still there.

Nice capture Steve, caught it well being at a distance and cropped. I don't recall ever seeing one of these

A good pull in for 70m of a small target.

As a matter of interest, I note you have both 1.4 x and 2.0x converters, what are your experiences of using them, are they Mk2 or 3? I have the 1.4 Mk2 but rarely use it except sometimes on my 70 -200L and it does a decent job on there, I have been considering changing for a Mk3 and using it on my 300mm F2.8L but unsure as to the difference in quality between the two?? Any thoughts?

                    Regards Paul

                      Re: Redhead Smew

I have the Mk3 versions Paul but tend to use the 1.4x most of the time with no degradation in quality. I have used the 2x on my 300 2.8 and it was fine , did slow the focusing down a bit but you would expect that , image quality was fine . I have recently acquired a 1.4 mk2 to use with my sigma lens as the mk3 will not autofocus but I have not used it yest so cannot compare the two.

Thanks for that, interesting that the Mk2 will AF with a Sigma but the Mk3 won't, I would be interested to hear a comparison between the Mk 2 and 3 of the 1.4 from anyone who has upgraded

Thanks for your reply and sorry to have strayed a bit from your thread
