    EF 28mm f1.8

Does anyone have real world experience of this lens...internet reviews are not good but I don't expect it to be super sharp in the corners...I'd be using it on a crop body... the 2.8 looks better from reviews but I d really like the faster max aperture ...any advice please?

Well, I know you asked for real world experience, but as there have been no replies .....

When I was looking for wide angle lenses I considered whether to go for a couple of primes rather than a zoom and so I read all of the reviews I could find. As far as the 1.8 28mm was concerned, it seems that the border performance is poor throughout, even on the crop sensor, while the centre performance is poor until you stop down to F2.8, from which point it becomes very good. So if you are looking to shoot at F1.8 it would seem a poor choice, as you need to stop down to about F2.8 for decent quality, even in the centre. The F2.8 lens seems to be better all round.

If you haven't seen it, try this detailed review :

especially 4. Image quality and 11. Summary

28 mm on a crop body isn't a very common choice, I guess at 45 mm equivalent it's close to a "standard" lens.

      Thanks Richard,

I've not used lens tip...Ill have a good read of that later.

i know 45mm seems like an odd focal length and probably a bit long for a general lens but I seem to keep my 50mm on the 5D3 so i think I can get along with that....maybe a 24 would be better.

Hence the newer STM pancake 24 is widely liked...and that might be a choice...I'm not too keen on the EF-S plastic construction so was thinking the older primes would at least feel better to use....but maybe thats for me to get over as they appear to perform really well.

I use the Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM. Try reading the review on Lenstip:
Best digital cameras and lens reviews. If you are looking for the information about digital cameras and lenses you are in a right place. We have many professional tests of digital photography equipment.

From their summary : "In the frame centre the Sigma behaves better than more expensive constructions of Canon and Nikon. At the edge it is worse than the Nikkor but it can compete on equal terms with the Canon. In fact it doesn’t lag behind the competitors in any category and in some it fares definitely better. ............ To sum up the Sigma 17–50 mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM will find many satisfied users for sure. It would be difficult not to be satisfied when you can take photos as good as or even better than the brand name competitors using a cheaper lens."

The Canon Lens they are comparing it with is the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM Lens currently in Wex at £749, the Sigma is a mere £279, the best value lens I've ever bought. Both are for crop bodies only.

The sigma is indeed a great lens, I went with the canon version, I paid less than £300 and it looks new, they seem to go for around £250-£300 on eBay. they are £600 new on amazon. All these lens choices.... I guess it keeps us spending our hard earned!

Going price for the Canon new was £599 from main dealers until very recently, maybe a price rise has crept in unnoticed, perhaps a sign of things to come. EBay used seem to be £375 or more at present. I guess if you have a good used lens to sell and the new price rises, you're onto a good thing!
Prices are odd things, when the Sigma 105mm macros OS came out it was more expensive than the 100 mm Canon, not wise pricing, now it's typically £319 compared to £869 for the Canon, a massive turnaround.

Yep, the sigma 105 is very tempting, it's as good, as the cannon for way less than half the money!
