Would anyone recommend this...thinking about adding it to my new light weight kit of 100D, EF-S 24mm STM and E-FS18-55ISII...looks like really good value and very small...(mind you I'm going to need a big bag for it all at this rate!)

Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM
Yes, I would recommend it. I took mine on a recent Caribbean holiday, and used it quite frequently, including shots of yacht racing, and was well pleased with it. My total kit was the original 'kit' lens (18-55), a 10-18 EFS, and the 55-250, which fitted (just) in the small Canon bag - that had come as a 'freebie' with the 100D.

Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM
It's good value, and light and easy to carry around. Not the very sharpest at 250 mm, but you'd have to pay a lot more and carry a lot more weight to get better. I wouldn't try tracking fast moving birds in flight with it though, didn't have much success with it for that myself.EOS 6D, 6D Mk II, 80D, 70D, 100D, 200D, M50, M100. Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM
I had a mk1 version of this lens several years ago ,and I would think this new version must surely be better .if I'm correct in fact there are currently two versions of this len available ,the stm version and a mkiii standard i.s version which is cheaper .there are lots of these available online in white box I.e ex kit lenses sub one hundred pounds .
As to being fast enough coupled with a fast enough body they are as ,many years ago with mine I got a kingfisher in flight

Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM
I have got the canon 10-18mm lens and the 55-250mm stm lens. Both are very good and excellent as travel/holiday lenses. Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM
Thanks Guys, Yes i remember the MKI didn't have a good reputation...but this is a few generations later and the STM versions seem to be incredibly good value and high performers.
I don't use wide angles very much...Ive just checked my Lightroom library and of all the images taken with the 17-40 most are at 30mm and above. It makes sense for me as I have 24mm prime, 18-55 IS II, so a telephoto is the obvious way to go for a nice light rig in a small bag.
Thanks All....much appreciated.Brian Vickers LRPS

Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM
Your reasoning is quite sound Brian. I use my 17-40mm lens with my FF 6D and hence I bought the 10-18mm wide angle to take with me on holidays. I will also buy the 24mm lens for the mid range and with my 55-250mm STM lens I will have all my bases covered.Canon 6D; Canon 760D;Canon G15;Canon 40mm f2.8(Pancake);Canon 50mm f1.8(ii); Canon 17mm-40mm f4L;Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM;Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 STM lens;Canon 24mm-105mmf4L IS;Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L IS USM;Kenko 1.4x HD TC;Canon 430EX ii flash;Giottos tripod;Manfretto monopod;Cokin P filters + bits and pieces!

Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM
I have the IS USM version which I'm rather impressed by, I don't think they changed the optical design with the STM only the drive system.

Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM
I think the following from Photozone about sums it up :
"The original EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS set a pretty impressive benchmark for tele zoom "kit" lenses. So what about the new STM lens then ? Unsurprisingly the lens performs best at 55mm resulting in very good to excellent figures across the image frame. There's slight deterioration towards longer focal lengths. However, even at 250mm it is capable of delivering a very good to excellent result in the center and good to very good borders & corners. Thus compared to the first version, the wide end is marginally weaker whereas the center quality is marginally better."
Not much difference optically between the two versions, negligible really, just different a/f motors.
There's nothing to beat it for price, quality, weight and price, no competition really.EOS 6D, 6D Mk II, 80D, 70D, 100D, 200D, M50, M100. It was the first lens I bought and still use it when I don't want to carry, or think I'll need the reach, of the 100-400 (which was a later addition anyway). Feel free to browse my Flickr albums where I used the lens, although bear on mind that the Farnborough Airshow one was my first ever outing with a DSLR, let alone that lens

Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM
Excellent pics on Flickr Chris. I have nothing against the 55-250mm lens. It actually shoots above it's weight despite it's low price.Canon 6D; Canon 760D;Canon G15;Canon 40mm f2.8(Pancake);Canon 50mm f1.8(ii); Canon 17mm-40mm f4L;Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM;Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 STM lens;Canon 24mm-105mmf4L IS;Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L IS USM;Kenko 1.4x HD TC;Canon 430EX ii flash;Giottos tripod;Manfretto monopod;Cokin P filters + bits and pieces!
