      Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM

the wide zoom is quite a limited zoom range
Not really. At the wide end even a mm of change in focal length makes a big difference to the angle of view, far more than at the long end. Personally, I find the wide zoom much more useful than the 50 mm. It's equivalent to 16 - 29 mm on full frame, a very useful range. If they tried to make a wider range, the quality would inevitably fall off, or the price would skyrocket
when I want really shallow DoF
You need to stop down the 50 mm by a stop or two to get good results, at which point it is very sharp in the centre, but the dof increases. However, the bokeh is notoriously poor compared to more expensive 50 mm lenses, which rather spoils the out of focus look. On the APS-C bodies I much prefer the 60 mm macro, similar focal length, much better build and quality, more expensive but easily available used in excellent condition. Plus you get true macro, of course

        Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM

        Thanks Richard
I have the 50f1.2L so it seems a bit crazy that I need that length but it is one big heavey lens. Thanks for the 60 macro suggestion...
I was hoping the 10-18 would equate to the 17-40 on my 5D3 but it's long end stops short of that of course which is why i considered it limited. Thanks for this!

          Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM

Basically, Canon covered the full range with the three IS STM lenses, 10 - 18, 18 - 55, 55 - 250, equivalent to 16 - 400 mm FF, so I guess that's why it stops at 18 mm. It's an incredible value and lightweight set, provided you don't need large apertures, and you already have 2 of the 3. I have to say I'm a lot more comfortable carrying them around all day than the equivalents on FF

            Re: EF-S 55-2250 IS STM

Yes I agree its a great lightweight set up. My 18-55 is the older IS II not STM but apart from the wobbly end I van live with the noisy focussing.
With the reservations regarding bokeh quality of the 50 STM I'm thinking the 10-18 STM is now top of my list.
