...you could try to manually prefocus....I guess with a 50mm lens on 60D thats about 80mm on full frame so you must be a good 10 feet away to get them in the frame...so depth of field with f8 focussed at say 8ft should give 7ft to 9,1/2 feet in focus. 1/250th should freeze movement.
Use bounce flash too on ETTL.
And if the ISO goes really high and you have too much noise then overexpose by 1 stop...that will reduce the noise and you can reduce the exposure in post processing. It would be good if you could post some examples.
Thanks very much for the suggestions, I will try these out and see how I get on. If I'm still having problems I'll post a couple of examples.

...with flash I was only suggesting single shot....if you want to take multiple shots then either natural light from a window or an external constant light on a stand would be better.

They say never work with animals or children but who can resist those cherub like faces? Here are a handful of hopefully helpful pointers that one can try when it comes to framing tots and toddlers: Most children will have the patience of a fly so start by netting the ‘safe shots’ first, such as […]

Think by now you've probably got the idea that the issue is probably to do with illumination.

In defence of the 60D, this was the body I chose to get back into photography. Compared to current crop of cameras it was fewer AF points and isn't as quick, but it works fine IMHO.

For example these are a couple of images I took using the 60D and a Tamron 70-300

Great pictures, especially of Amber! This sort of sharp focus is what I'm aiming for, I do get it occasionally but not enough.

Can I ask what settings you used for the Amber photo?

Yep no problem, obviously being outside and good light helped.

AI servo, f4, 1/2500, ISO 800 and 81mm (so EFL about 135). Taken a while ago but IIRC most likely shutter priority.
