Random documentary of a suburban place

One day ill be recognised as a great documentary photographer....until then Ill have to make do with the mistakes of my mere mortal delusional self.....anyway, thought I'd go for a random walk.....dog on the lead this time....so set the 100D with 24mm STM to jpeg and black and white with sepia to see what happened.

Works rather well as a series and some would do as stand alone shots - the Texaco garage (sans the bit of car on the right), the graffitti'd GPO telephone junction box and the rose of Kashmir.

This is the sort of exercise we should probably all do from time to time - challenge ourselves to use one lens and try to get it right in camera. I once spent a day wandering around Portsmouth harbour with just a Yashica GSN rangefinder - really made me have to think about the shot just using film and a fixed lens.

I totally agree..I like going out with just one lens.....and I think switching to jpeg made me more critical about exposure.

Very 60's time warp- Takes me back.... Clayton Lodge!!

I love the idea of making something out of bland suburbia and you've succeeded well.

One note of caution would be the intrusive vertical poles- street lights/belisha beacons tend to cut up the shot.

                Thanks Bo,
interesting....I thought the belisha beacon one worked ok...depends if you see it as part of the subject or just in the way of the subject....hmmm...thinking about that one....maybe a portrait version would have indicated its intended inclusion better
                Thanks for that.

I see where you're coming from on the beacon shot and it is indeed an integral part of the crossing. But vertical poles,IMHO, especially when they reach nearly to the top of the picture, can slice the picture in two so I would try & move them to one side in the composition.
I think the beauty of posting on here is that folks come in from the cold, look at your masterpiece and point things out that you'd never even considered. Of course it's down to you then to do with as you wish!
On balance i love the suburban feeling that you've captured so well and going out with one lens and jpeg is a useful exercise for us all.

Thanks Nat...I chose mono because I wanted an abstract element...I guess colour would work as well to document the area..probably better...but might look a bit random and ordinary and leave nothing for the viewer to add in interpretation
                            Thanks for sharing your view.
I did shoot jpeg+RAW so might have a go at a colour set later.

I've just had a quick try with colour....processed a bit gritty to suit the feel of the location....just my interpretation...definite potential
