My son had One ,which I also tried out ,to be honest it left both of us very underwhelmed and was sold on within a few months ,I think you will find your present 100-400 mkii is a better sharper lens .
Neither of us managed to get shots with that intangible "bite" to them out of the DO lens ,and even worse when you use a t.c .sorry but that's the truth

Interesting, the Mk 1 had very poor reviews, the Mk II was reckoned to be very much better. A massive price premium though compared to the competition.

I did consider the first generation DO 400mm lens and was advised not to as the IQ was not very good at the price of the lens. Since then I bought the Canon 70-300mm L lens and have no regrets whatsoever.

Eosbabie, I hope you will let us know your thoughts on it, I hope it impresses too, I wouldn't take into account the odd comment as you do get the odd duffer in the pack, mine was a Canon 100-400 MK1, the first copy was dire, the replacement they sent out was awesome.
            Canon 1DX, 50D, EF500 F4.0 L, EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L I , EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II, EF70-200 f/2.8L II, EF180 f3.5L Macro, EF 24-105 f/4L, EF17-40 f/4L, EF2.0X III, EF1.4X III, 430EX II, MR-14EX...

Looking sweet already and we haven't seen it in action yet, I am surprised how relatively compact it is.

It is actually the compact size which tempted me to look at the Mk1 but inquries made with other members who had owned one completely put me off and I went for the 70-300mm L lens.No regrets at all.

I have that very lens, and I find it very good though short in reach.

While the DO is heavier Lens than the 70-300L, the Mass is more spread making it manageable to hand hold.

On the other hand the 70-300L Mass is in a short space and tends to make it feel slightly unbalanced.

Mounted on a 7D MkII and Combined with a Canon 1.4 Mk III Converter the DO becomes a 896mm at 5.6 with Autfocus, Fantastico.

With these two lenses my Wildlife photography will be taken care of for a very long time.

That's the Long and the Short of it for me.

                            Regards.

Re: 400mm F4 DO Lens MkII

Errr not sure where your getting your maths from ,you will have with the lens and t.c a native focal length of 560mm at f 6.3 , you cannot take the crop factor of the camera sensor into the equation it simply doesn't work like that .
So in actual fact you would have got further reach out of a sigma 150-600 at the same f stop and if you add a 1.4 tc to that you get a native 840mm of reach ,again no sensor multiplications involved ,also what your not taking into account is the fact that ALL t.c's degrade i.q to a fair extent and I think you will find that's it's far worse on a DO lens .

Nikon tried the sensor multiplication scam a few years ago with there now withdrawn v series cameras that with a adaptor and normal Nikon lenses offered a supposed 3x crop factor ,I.e a 300mm lens became a 900mm lens .the only trouble is that the image size via the sensor didn't allow you to crop i any more than it would with a crop or full frame sensor .so you actually ended up spending loads an gaining absolutely nothing .

If my memory serves me correctly ,our very own eos. Magazine did a article explaining all this a year or so back .in fact I will stick my neck out here and state that everyone using a crop factor camera to gain reach is in fact fooling themselves ,you get extacly the same I.q cropping from a full frame image
