    First Try At Solar Photography

I have finally managed to build myself a solar filter for my 4" MCT scope and have today attached my 60D EOS. The pictures were not great but I was pleased at my first attempt. The shot shown shows some good sunspot images. It can only get better!!

To get any sort of image from the sun deserves kudos - well done

I agree Tony - for your first session I think that's a good result and you should be well pleased! I only ever used card projection but haven't done any solar work for many years. Not sure where we are in the cycle right now. Never tried this myself but I imagine that limb photography and capturing a prominence would be the ultimate achievement but that probably involves some fairly specialist kit ...

I was also surprised at how white the sun was in the image but the filter that was used is designed to give the most accurate representation of the actual colour. Some other filters can give a yellow or even orange tint that is not really true to the actual appearance. I used a simple self-built filter using cardboard, gaffer tape and a sheet of Baader filter paper that blocks out 99.999% of the suns light. The whole thing cost no more than £20 (25USD). If you look on line you can find loads of videos that shows you how to make one

              Hi,
You are probably right as to catch images such as prominence's would require some serious filters and loads of patience. Maybe in a few more years when I can afford to finish work and spend my time sitting in the sun
