    Black Grouse

    Up at 3-30am a couple of weeks ago in order to travel to this Lekking grounds in order to get there before day break. I was rewarded with a great display by 19 male Black Grouse going through their display ritual to try and impress the females. Wonderful to hear their calls in the pitch black darkness and their watch their territorial behavior when the sun came up.Black Grouse by steve dawes, on Flickr

                        Cracking set of something I've never witnessed; but then I don't generally 'do' 3:30 in the morning.
                        Well worth the effort, and a very enjoyable set; particularly like #3...
                        Cheers;

                            Wow what great shots, since seeing my first Lek from a distance I have been waiting for a decent morning to go out early, but as we have had overnight snow the last 3 mornings & more forecast, I have just not managed to get out. Even so, they will Never be as good as these.

                              Thanks David , you can't say you will never get any better as that I don't believe photography works like that, if you keep getting out and about you never know what might just appear in front of you at any given time . I used the car as the hide to get quite close to these as the Lekking ground is not too far away from the road but they are still cropped quite heavily. I am sure you will have further opportunities in your neck of the woods it is the " grouse capital " of the UK.
