    Tripods/Gimbals

I was in a bird hide last week with several other EOS photographers - two whom had EOS1D's with big canon lenses 500/600mm & extenders. Two gents were supporting the cameras on gimbals with the gimbal attached to a half moon shaped metal(?) device with multiple screw threaded leg fixing holes. Three short legs, metal, with fixed ball feet; this allowed the camera to be positioned on the bird hide shelf.

Does anyone know what these gimbal 'supports' are called/manufacturers details please.
    Regards

    John Tilly

              Re: Tripods/Gimbals

I am tempted by this , if used on ground level how high off the ground with attached Gimbal would you say the lens would be ? It must be strong and well made to take those weights .

I would be wary of their Arca plates as they are different to most

When I caught wind that the tripod masters at Really Right Stuff were about to release a new product, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I love new gear. Because it had not even finished final production yet, they unfortunately could not send me a brand new one in time to satisfy my desire to see it. However, they didn't want to disappoint and instead sent me the prototype! Score! Let’s take a look at the TFA-01 Pocket Pod. So what is the Pocket Pod?

Thanks for all those links and suggestions Tony , I have the biggest bean bag offered by wildlife watching supplies , and if I lay prone on the ground with it , I get a really bad neck ache , I think if I propped myself up on my elbows , and supported the camera a little higher it would help my ageing bones , this looks like it could work for me .

If I am using it splayed out yes. I have a kirk clamp I put on it and on that I put a pano head and a monopod head the Pano allows me to put the lens over a leg. BUT you have to be very wary.

and one of these on that

I use those two items on my monopod as well and even though I have a ballhead I prefer them on my tripod as it pans and elevates without falling over like a ball... in most uses i use my 500 on my monopod, especially in hides.
