Tamron SP 70-200 f2.8 Di VC USD G2

Just read a test report on the above (wish name was shorter) and quite a surprising concusion.

In the verdict said it had spectacular image quality and all-round performance.

And summed up with 'In many respects, it's better than Canon's highly acclaimed equiv'.

That's some conclusion and given that its somewhat cheaper, about £600 less, it could be a good alternative.

Hello Ant; where was the report - posting the link might be helpful...

I have a 70-200 f/2.8 Mk II, so it's probably a non-starter for me, but may be helpful to others who are looking to acquire a lens in that arena...

Unless it's an absolute duffer, I always find it quite difficult to make meaningful comparisons without 'real-world' experience, and couched phrases like "...In many respects..." don't help! My immediate question is 'In what respects isn't it as good as Canon?'... but then I'm a cynical sod!
    Cheers;
    Lee

hmmm someone giving a rave review to get a freebie ,which is the norm unfortunately honest reviews normally don't get published as at the end of the day there just used to sell products .
the only place that offers slightly better reviews is u-tube but then again you have to depend on the skill and knowledge of the reviewer as i found with a well known stateside reviewer who tested one of the sigma 150-600 sport models soon after release ,and deemed it just o.k when i sent him a message asking if he had tuned it using the usb hub he didn't have a clue what i was talking about ,thus making his review totally useless .

i find the best test of a lens is to take your camera body to a decent local shop and ask if you can take some test shots with the lens of your desire ,.take some shots then go home and review on your own computer .if it passes then go back and purchase one

I must agree with what Jeff has stated above. It is always best to try a lens on your camera before making a decision. I am thinking hard and fast about the Sigma 100-400mm lens after trying it out.

Couldn't agree more test out yourself if possible. But having said that there is little point testing a lens that is a poor performer so reviews (from trusted sources) are a starting point.

The review I mentioned is another Canon focused (sic) magazine.

Just to pick out a few of the quotes:
            Weather sealed metal casing
Centre sharpness beats the Canon all through the zoom range, edge sharpness is marginally less upto 135mm but edges into lead at longer zoom settings. Negligible colour fringing, very little distortion and great resistance to ghosting and flare.
AF is super fast and VC system is amazing.

Most likely other reviews out there from sources of various trust.

At roughly 2/3 price of the Canon it should be worth a look if it's a lens your thinking about.
