Very pleased with 5D Mark IV

At Christmas I was fortunate to be able to buy myself a 5D Mark IV, so far I am very pleased with it.
To some the changes from the 5D Mark III were only incremental but it has proved a good upgrade in a few areas.
Key for me was the noise performance, in low light and and at high ISO usable images are easier to achieve and the images look noticeably better.
The touch screen was something I thought I would not use but it does aid speedier navigation and quicker changes to settings etc.
I have been very pleased with performance and have found it a worthy upgrade.

Definitely Ian, the focus is more solid and quick with less hunting in low light. I have been amazed at some of the situations its coped with.

I loved my 5D Mklll, but am loving the 5D MklV even more.

One hell of a camera, albeit a hefty price hike from the Mklll.

I tested its low light capabilities with a lee big stopper and during daylight focused locked straight away...not bad :)

I use both a 5D III and a 5D IV. The old III is still a great camera but the IV is awesome. As soon as the light level drops the Mk IV comes into its own. Focusing is the first benefit, low noise in dark areas, improved high ISO performance, improved dynamic range, Wi Fi, and I could go on. The more I use it the more I love it. That said I shall continue to use the Mk III as well as when the conditions are less exacting, it still produces the goods.

I could understand you still wanting to use the MkIII if the conditions don't push the camera which really are few, but surly with the larger image size I don't understand why ?

When printing at A3 there absolutely no visible difference between the Mk 3 and the Mk 4. I use both for the convenience of not having to change lenses. In the studio I have a prime portrait lens on one and a prime lens for full length shots on the other. When out I have one with a 24mm - 70mm Zoom and the other with a 70mm - 200mm Zoom. Outdoors I hate changing lenses and in the studio it is just a faster way to work. The fixation with pixel count is an amateur thing, after all the professionals with their 1DX Mk11 manage to cope with just 20.2 mp.

If I could discern a visible difference I would always use the Mk 4 but in good lighting conditions the difference can only be discerned if you Pixel peek or decide to print and incredibly severe crop, and I do neither of these things.

I very nearly didn't buy the Mk 4 Because I was concerned that the additional pixels might throw up diffraction problems with some of my lenses.

I kept my 5DIII, but purely as a backup in case anything happened to my Mark IV in the future.
I'll use my Mark IV as my primary in all cases, I don't see a reason to use my Mark III unless forced to.

Having a high value camera merely as a backup seems a waste. For much of my photography either camera will cope so convenience is my reason to use both. When conditions dictate then the Mk4 will take precedence. I have always used 2 cameras for the last 45 years it just saves me so much time changing lenses as I never use zooms in the studio. When outdoors I do use zooms but again prefer not to risk contamination by changing lenses outdoors. Personal preference and years of practice have led me to this way of working and as I shoot around 20,000 images a year I shall continue with the way I like.

Re: Very pleased with 5D Mark IV

When the EOS 5D/R-S was launched many people's mouths were gaping at the 51 MPixels. However, MK IV turned out to be more popular at almost the same price as R/S. In fact this morning I was surprised to find that a local store sells the DS at 3.212 Euro and the MK IV at 3.571 Euro (bodies only). This probably shows that the 51 MP body is not so popular despite its monstrous resolution. Could it be that the S/R monster has some design issues or do people feel uncomfortable with such high resolution?
                        Any explanation?

I have both the IV and the DSr and they are different cameras for different purposes really. The IV is definitely the more versatile and high-end general purpose camera. The DSr is a little less versatile. However, they are both excellent in their own fields. My IV is my day-to-day carry around camera - usually with a 24-105 on it. My DSr is a tripod-only (for me anyway) camera used for planned landscape / architecture outings with a wide prime attached. I bought the DSr before the IV was released - if the IV had been available first, then I probably would not have bought a DSr at all.

When the 5DS pair were introduced they were a lot more expensive than the then current 5D III. Sadly in recent years new camera price appear to be stuck on a rising scale so I'm not entirely surprised that the MkIV is more than the 5DS versions. Generally as models age they also seem to get cheaper - if only because everything else gets more expensive.

I wouldn't say there are any design faults with the 5DS cameras but they were introduced for a different purpose - that of extremely high resolution photography under controlled conditions at a lower price and in a more compact form than the medium format alternatives. To get the best out of them requires top notch lenses and top notch technique - they're more specialist cameras than enthusiast...

I agree that the 5DS pair could be considered quite specialist. They are not really 'all round' cameras when compared other full frames cameras - the low (standard) ISO of 100-6400 stands out for me.
