Well taken Stan but can't say I'm so keen on the head on butterfly shots.

          Thanks for looking John.

I am always looking for something different and a bit of a challenge, side on shots are quite easy and common so when the opportunity arises I go for the head on

I can understand where you are coming from Stan and experimentation is how we stretch our photography. But the attraction of a Butterfly is the pattern, or colours contained in their wings and without that dominating the shot ............. they are just Bugs!

                      I like it - it's different.

I never seem to be able to get close enough to butterflies - they always seem to flutter off whenever I get close.

                        thanks Ian and Chris

my point Chris, and of course with the wings up there is still a lot of the pattern/colour showing

I never seem to be able to get close enough to butterflies - they always seem to flutter off whenever I get close.
this is why a rarely use my macro for butterflies and dragonflies, prefer the long macro combination of my 300 f4 with or without the 1.4x. The extra working distance avoids spooking them and often at minimum focus distance of about 1.5 metres you can get the subject almost as bit as if you were close with the macro
