Anyone tried stacking teleconvertors and how was it?

I have a set of kenko extension tubes ( 12mm needed on the MK3 tele's) so I could put the x2 and 1.4 on my 500mm taking me up to about 1400mm, which will add 400MM to my reach.

I am determined that these Bee Eaters are not going to beat me . I just wonder if anyone has tried stacking them and what were the results like, reading up the x2 needs to be on the lens and the 1.4 at the body and it should autofocus.. (1DX)

I realise a snail farting at 50 yards will probably cause camera shake with that extension, so just wondered if it is feasible and practicable.
And to paraphrase Buzz Lightyear... "To infinity and beyond," may no longer be possible.

Thanks, if it doesn't work, I will just go back to using the x2 again.

it should work albeit with manual focus in theory ,but i have heard that the camera only recognises the rear 1.4 so i may be wrong ,the main problem i can forsee will be a dim viewfinder .worth a go anyway

Maybe I'm being dim but if you are trying to photograph birds a long way off why the extension tubes? Adding in an extension tube will immediately reduce your maximum focus distance to well short of infinity and possibly well short of the distance of the birds...

Think you were referring to "extender" Tony, rather than "extension".

I have done it with MKII extenders on a 1D MKIV and it was better than expected, but I haven't tried it with MKIII extenders on a 1Dx yet. You will be shooting with 1,400mm on full frame, so forget the IS of the 500mm and go for a reciprocal shutter speed of above 1/1400sec and see how it goes.

I would be tempted to get some shots with the extenders, then maybe take the 2X off and use your fieldcraft skills to get closer and try to take some more shots.

            Good luck.

IIRC there was a link in a recent post about stacking 3 and 5 2x extenders with an 800 for lunar shots ... the results were pretty decent although focus expectations were probably lower than would be wanted for birds ...

Thanks everyone, I will give it a go.
Nige, the MK 3 teleconvertors elements stick out past the mount unlike the MK 2 that are flush or recessed, so you need to put an extender between them so they can be joined.
