Challenge 132 - Recreate an image

The title is Recreate an image. Choose an image that speaks to you, it could be an old Flemish master or a contemporary artist, it could be an image from a photographer that you admire, it could be a still from a film, or it could be something current that has appeared in the news. The choice is yours, let you imagination run wild, but whatever image you choose be sure to put your own spin on it.

When you post your entry be sure to put a link to your reference image in your entry as well, as we all need to know where your inspiration came from.

I'll be looking at not just how well you managed to replicate your image but also how you made it your own.

Please abide by the general rules:
    • The competition subject shall be selected by the winner of the preceding competition who will also judge the competition.
    • One picture per person; images should conform to general image posting rules.
    • Please use an EOS Canon camera - DSLR or M series.
    • Posted images should be taken during the running period of the competition. Any images submitted that were taken before the competition started, or after the competition has ended, will be deemed invalid.
    • Images 800 pixels widest max (to help those with small monitors).
    • No Photoshop frames and borders.
    • Include a link to your reference image
    • Please, NO comments on images- on this or another thread- until the round is over.
    • No canvassing e.g. “I’m thinking of posting this image for the challenge, what do you think?”
    • I will pick 1st, 2nd and 3rd favourite images (please don’t PM me to discuss my choices).

Closing date for posted entries this time is Midnight BST on Sunday 6th August.

So please, get shooting and I look forward to seeing the entries.

      Well, someone has to start....

Lisa here was moaning at her son who was misbehaving, which, of course, makes her MOANER LISA.

Cheers, Chris, with tongue in cheek as usual.....

Egon Schiele was thought of as controversial, self-indulgent and pornographic during his short but productive lifetime. History has dealt kindly with him and his "Seated woman with bent knee"- is now considered a masterpiece

My model has none of the youth, suppleness and serenity that Shiele's model seems to take for granted.

Didn't work out as well as I'd hoped, but thought I'd post it anyway if only to raise a smile at schadenfreude. My attempt at the album cover of probably the greatest album ever made (in my humble opinion, of course).

            Dark Side of the Moon:

I bought a prism specially and was rather hoping that I would shine a light into it and a beautiful spectrum would burst forth like you see in the illustrations. In actual fact it was a very muted set of colours. I have pushed the saturation to the limit to make it visible which has degraded it somewhat but hey ho, it is what it is. I could of course have drawn the colours in PS but that sort of seemed against the spirit of the Challenge.

Andy Warhol debuted his "Flowers" set of paintings in 1964 (the year I was born). They were all based around a photo he had originally seen in a magazine called Modern Photography, so it seemed quite apt that we've gone full circle. All of the canvases were square and consisted of four flowers, although there are many variations in colours. Mine is based on a single head of a Cosmos in my garden.

With the dead line quickly approaching, this is a gentle reminder for Chris J and Daisy M to provide links to their reference images, if they wish their entries to be considered. I have no intention of hunting through Google Images no matter how well known the reference might be.

All in all a great set of images which proved quite a challenge to rank, what follows is my critique and whilst I have tried to be objective I am afraid that my own personal taste have very probably influenced the results. Thanks to all who put in the effort to submit work to this month’s challenge.

Nice work, you have nicely replicated the essential elements of your reference image, the colours, pose and costume, whilst your use of an older male model has infused the image with your personal touch. You could have improved your image with the use of a softer light source to tone down the highlights which look a touch over blown and soften up the shadows. Given that it looks like you’ve used natural light a white sheet used as a diffuser would have done the trick.

                        AlexR!
You have chosen quite a tricky image to reproduce, but the results are nice despite the limitations you have already recognised. Not having played around with prisms for a long time I have no suggestions as to how you could have improved your results.

                        ricewind
You’ve manage to capture all the main elements of the original image, and you have certainly managed stamp this as your own take on it. However attention to the foreground detail (ie. comparative levelling) and a more considered choice of back ground could have improved your results

                        ctrollen
You have managed to capture all the elements of your reference image and your use of hyper saturation has nicely differentiated your version from Warhol’s original.

                        Daisy M
I can certainly see element of the original in your image. A higher point of view however would have brought your image more into line with the original, and we would then have got more of the reflected sky in the surface of the water as depicted in the original.

                        So the results from third to first;

Congratulation to ctrollen, I will look forward to what you challenge us with for the month of August.

Well done Chris, a difficult one but well executed & thought out. Thanks Jonathan for making our brains work a bit harder than normal.

Oh, blimey! Once again I am chuffed and honoured to have my entry chosen above some really good other entries. Well done to all who entered and thanks to Jonathan for a great idea. As Dave said, it did make our brains have to work a bit harder, so thanks go to my missus for coming up with the idea because I was struggling!

If anyone is interested, this is the original OOC shot, taken in my garden with the 100mm macro lens - and only because that was on the camera at the time!

I had several different versions for the final entry with varying colours & positions (just like Warhol did) and simply chose the one I liked the best.

I already have an idea for the next challenge, and will post details a little later.

Jonathan, thanks for setting and judging such a stimulating challenge. Such a shame that more people didn't give it a go because everyone's different ideas are so fascinating. Well done to everyone who did enter; I did keep going back to some and chuckling.
So congratulations to Chris and looking forward to the next one.
