      Re: Optical illusion or what? Re- IS

      Hi Nat; some wise words from our esteemed members... One other thing to consider, more so when using slower lenses (say f/5.6 or less) is that using IS will slow down AF. I.e the time it talks to acquire focus-lock is extended when using IS. That again 'may' be a reason why you're seeing softer images; AF 'may' not have locked-on accurately!

      I'm with Colin; I have IS switched OFF by default. It's only a tool in out armoury that we can use 'if' the need arises; its use is not 'mandatory' which many users appear to see as the case. I.e if it's there - it must be used. I treat it the same as high-ISO; only to be used when absolutely necessary!

      Good luck playing...
      Cheers;
      Lee

        You are quite right Lee. I am now using IS only when I want to, esp as you say, at slow shutter speeds. It is a tool to prevent camera shake and not subject movement!

          The steady image that IS gives on the sensor is suppose to improve AF accuracy.

          Personally I've never seen a negative effect using IS at any shutter speed.

          If having turned off works for you Nat that's great.

            as i said earlier its more likely to be user error than i.s playing up .without being offensive nat at your tender age and with weight carrying/lifting problems re your gear i would definitely leave i.s switched on .i certainly never switch it off on mine

              Re: Optical illusion or what? Re- IS

              Based on Jeff's comments Nat it would be good to look at some of your images where you think there is an issue and establish which AF point was used to achieve focus.

              Generally, the wren image posted is an example, I use the single centre AF point where the scene is cluttered.

              I certainly have some age related issues with hand holding, particularly at longer focal lengths so the use of IS to reduce camera shake is a boon.

                Quite an interesting article particularly about AF.
