Volucella zonaria, a hoverfly that was previously scarce, only in south-east England, but which has expanded its range as far as Wales and the north Midlands in recent years.

It's cropped a little but not by very much. It's probably about 80% of the original size, with some dead space cropped off the right, and a little top & left to balance it a bit better.

Hi Chris; well done; much better than the shot I managed from our first garden visit last year from one... What caught my attention was the sheer size of the thing; compared to other hoverflys they're huge!!!
