      quite a few similar looking beetles and I think this is one of the very common soldier beetles - possibly rhagonycha fulva

      Collins Complete British Insects is a comprehensive guide or consider one of the series of Collins Gem books, there are insects, butterflies, spiders, wild flowers and a whole load of other titles

          Ah, thanks Stan. I have a shot of one too but hadn't worked out the correct ID despite some frantic googling! I also need a decent bug book!

            Rhagonycha fulva is later than other soldier beetles, so by this time it's almost the only one around, it has the dark tips to the elytra and otherwise completely orange. Be careful of insect field guides, they only have a selection of species and don't mention that there are often numerous similar ones, leading to a lot of incorrectly "identified" photos on the internet. Look at this for example for a comprehensive account of soldier beetles
