    EF500 written off :(

Just over a month ago, I had a very unfortunate 'accident' with my EF500 and 7D2 during which they ( and me ) were engulfed by a freak wave. After sending them to an authorised Canon repairer, it was no surprise that they were both written off . The 500 still focuses - albeit it intermittently - even with the switch on manual.

What I'm wondering is, would it be possible to blank off one (or more) of the contacts to the camera so that the camera doesn't try and communicate with the lens and in doing so, I can use the lens in manual focus mode. I did ask the repairers about this but they ( understandably) were reluctant to suggest anything. However, I have no idea which of the contacts is for fouccusing. Replacing it with a new 500 mkii is out of the question at the moment, so any suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers

The problem here is salt water ,its nearly as corrosive as acid ,if the camera and lens had been dunked in fresh water fairly quickly ,the damage might have been negated a bit .i take it this wasn't done .
You say that the lens still focusses intermittenly but my thoughts are it will get progressively worse ,salt water and electronics just do not go together sorry

Hi Robbie; never a good idea to wash the kit in salt water...
I don't have an answer to your question, but, is the kit covered under your insurance for accidental damage ??? That's the first place I'd be looking in that scenario!
      Good luck...

I did try this trick with an 1.4x extender to use it with a Sigma 500 f.5 and it worked!
Better than nothing in your case I guess; http://www.peeniewallie.com/2010/02/...eos-50d-w.html

Robbie, a spares ship on evilbay?

I would add even if your warranty on the camera may have expired etc, if you paid by credit card, check it may be insured.

Thanks for the replies folks. Firstly due to the distance involved, I was unable to dunk it in freshwater sadly. When I removed the lens from the body, there was no water ingress at all in to either the rear of the lens or into the camera body - the rubber seal stopped that. I'm pretty sure that any water got in through one of the switches which is why I think it still tries to focus even when switched off.

I've had the lens now for over 8 years and also paid cash for it which also rules out any credit card coverage. It's a reality that when we have gear that costs so much to replace, insurance premiums are also going to be high, coverage for my gear would be £500 plus a year.

Thanks for the other links I'll take a look.

I feel for you Robbie, I have all of mine insured and it costs about the same. Have you considered in the future not I nsuring it all, just the high cost items such as the body and most expensive lens, I would cry if I dropped mine

Your household insurance wouldn't cover it would it?

Household contents cover rather than dedicated equipment cover is the way to go IMO! I've always found that the 'specialists' rely on the fear factor, and/or are really geared up to professionals - and charge accordingly; whereas generally household cover is more than adequate; but you MUST ensure you cover for an adequate amount for out of house / travel requirements...

There are a number of policies around now that don't even require any specific notification for high value items - as long as you have declared the full contents cover requirement - and always bear in mind that if you are deemed to have under-insured then cover, in the event of a major claim, 'may' be denied on the grounds of fraud!!!!!

                  Re: EF500 written off

Mine is insured at roughly what I paid for it as some was second hand and I based the value on what it would cost to replace accordingly and not the new price.
I must admit when it renewed this time I checked their web page and got a quote for the total, then contacted them to add the bits I wanted to add, they quoted the premium at an increase of nearly £300, I quoted their website quote at under my current cost and at their request sent in a screen grab and was insured at the even lower price for more equipment than last year... so it pays to check.
