    1.4x 2x extender

I'm thinking about buying a used one for my MKI 100-400L....but which one.....I assume MKI/II/III are all compatible?

Is the 2x to be avoided....I know they degrade the IQ to some degree but what would be the best way to go?

Any advice would be much appreciated please

    Re: 1.4x 2x extender

I use the MK3 on the 100-400L MK1 and 2, the Mk2 has one advantage over them and that is they can be stacked, the design of the MK3 prevents that unless you add an extension ring between them, I cannot add about degrading, however all of them will degrade the image to some effect. one thing you will notice is a slower autofocus on any lens and an increased F stop.

As for the x2, well I never used to touch it having heard the same stories, but I dragged it out of the bag one day, put it on my 500 and as stunned at how well it copes, I realise the 500 probably makes anything look good, but if you look through these, a lot of my close up bird shots are taken with one or either of my converters fitted.

      Thanks Tony that's good information.

I had read about concerns regarding the100-400MkI IQ (and compared to the MKII its probably not as good) but was amazed how good it was when I eventually got one....maybe that's the same with extenders.
Your images look great of flickr with the 1.4x

I must admit I haven't seen much between the two versions of the lens, might be I have a good mk1 and a poor Mk2 lol

I have both 1.4 and 2x MkII extenders, the 1.4 lives on my 300 f4 most of the time and produces excellent images, the 2x works well on my 70-200 f2.8

Of course the 2x loses 2 stops of light so wont autofocus with the 100-400 even on your 5DIII

            Re: 1.4x 2x extender

If you want, I could get the 100-400 Mk1 out and take a shot with and without both Mk3's at what ever settings you want, and post them, would be the weekend though and you might have to give me a nudge to remember. I could post the images on flickr at 100% thus you would be able to compare, I realise flickr degrades images a bit, but it will be an equal degradation across all the images, so you should see any difference.

As Stan says re Autofocus, forgot to mention that.

I wanted to find out how well the Canon EF 100-400 II performed with a 1.4x extender on an APS-C camera. The results blew me away!

Some of Canon's DSLR cameras allow autofocus with lenses with a max f/8 aperture. Here's how to tell which ones.

Everything you'll ever need to know about using a 1.4x or 2x extender or teleconverter on your lens. Will it degrade the image? How can you prevent this?

I wouldn`t bother with the 2x on your current lens Brian , the 1.4 will serve you much better , the 2x comes into it`s own on the fast f2.8 / 4 lenses . I use a 2 x on my 300 2.8 , but if I am honest , though still very acceptable it does take the edge off of most my images , this could be of course down to me to some degree , though I do use a Tripod virtually all the time .

Agree with comment above: putting a x2 on the 100-400 is a step to far i think better to try the x1.4.
With a f2.8 lens its a different story i have no problems using a x2 mkIII on my 400mm.

Bowler running in at high speed and in full swing tracking and sharpness still no problem at 800mm f5.6.

Small note to my setup using the x2 converter I've had to adjust the AF micro-adjustment to -9 to get my images sharp! also this image is from my twitter so actually maybe a little over-sharp lol.

Thanks for your help Guys...I think the 1.4 is definitely the way to go considering the 2 stops loss...and with a 100-400 its not going to focus. Thanks for the offer Tony.....and what a great shot Paul.

                        See Tony's post above lol.

I used my 1dx +400mm +2x extender MKIII and adjusted the "AF micro-adjustment set at -9" which gives me slightly better results that no adjustment at all: also just using the 400mm without a converter " AF micro-adjustment is set at -5."

These setting work for my camera & lens combination though probably won't work on yours as everybody's will be slightly different a bit of trial and error but easy to adjust up and down.

I keep my 1.4 extender on my 100-400 MKII (on a 5D3) most of the time and am very happy with the results, however note that you do only get the single focus point so its fine for static targets but not best suited for moving ones as they are tricky to track accurately.
