    24-105 Err 01 ...

"Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts"

Common fault apparently but a first for me and the timing could hardly have been worse as I'm off to Kozfest tomorrow morning which is one of my big photography outings of the year.

I've identified it as being the lens at fault and, no, cleaning the contacts didn't cure it. My 16-35 works on the 5D3 but the 24-105 doesn't work on the 7D. This means I'm left with a 7D/15-85 combo which is not great in the low lighting I can expect and the 5D3/16-35 is hardly ideal for stage and 'street' type photography.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers,
    John

Search the forum for "ribbon" and see if anything returned matches your symptom ...

That's it a well known weak spot. Thanks for pointing it out.

I'll start ringing around for quotes but that won't be until after the weekend now.

      Cheers,

The tone of my answer wasn't meant to seem abrupt by the way ... was just the quickest way of pointing you towards some (hopefully) helpful information ... good luck with the lens!

John, just a thought and possibly too late for your Kozfest trip. But I wondered would the 15-85 lens work on the 5D3 if it was coupled with an extension tube. That assumes you have a set of tubes.

Hi John; have you got time to hire a lens from a local source???

As an aside; my (10 year old) 24-105 gave up the ghost with that same message a month or so back; required a new aperture assembly! Canon fixed for a fixed-price and the lens is now as good as new... Good luck...
            Cheers;
            Lee

Thanks for all the thoughts and suggestions folks

I've just called Mifsud, my nearest 'serious' camera shop, who sadly, don't carry out repairs themselves so I'll have to send it to Canon but that's going to have to wait until after the weekend as I'm leaving soon. I don't have time to source a hire/loaner lens so I'll take my 7D/15-85 for daytime and see how my 5D3 works with my 50 1.8 at night. I may try the 50 on the 7D but at an equivalent 80mm may be a bit too long.

                  Cheers,
                  John

They do however have a used one in stock, ask the question, while they have yours in for repair would they consider hiring out the one in stock?

                      Re: 24-105 Err 01 ...

                      A follow up for this...

Not having my 24-105 for Kozfest meant I did use my 7D/15-85 and 5D3/50mm 1.8 instead. Not ideal and the weather was rubbish so nothing worth sharing.

I sent the lens to Canon for repair but as I don't qualify for CPS they advised a three week turn around which was bad news as I'm away on a family holiday on Saturday (John Liddle: Carnevas) meaning my favourite 'walking around' lens would again be unavailable. I contacted Canon explaining this and that I was only one lens short of CPS so they very kindly pulled out the stops, repaired it quickly (£156.50) and dispatched it yesterday via UPS for 'next day' delivery.

Good news? Well... UPS tracking inform me that: "An emergency situation or severe weather condition has delayed delivery. / Delivery will be rescheduled". Obviously a stock cover-all statement so who knows what's happening. I e-mailed UPS but got an automated reply that I "will get a response within one working day". Unless it turns up tomorrow it looks like the 7D is coming to Cornwall again

                      Cheers,
                      John

Not what you may want to hear, but they were quite badly hit by a recent ransomware attack which left their live systems in a bit of a mess. They were unable to tell where many of their shipments actually were. My package arrived two days late.

That really is not what I wanted to hear as two days late will be the same as two weeks late 'cos I won't be here. Then I'd probably find it's been returned to Canon as nobody was here to sign for it - or worse the courier left it on the step.

You could try phoning their helpline first thing tomorrow to see if they can at least tell you where the package is. If it's not going to arrive on time you could ask that they redirect to your holiday address ...

Just checked if I qualify for CPS, my 50D isn't on the list so only one body in my 1DX but 7 lenses qualify for
                              Platinum. So still no joy

Hope you get it sorted soon.
