Not the same black card and vase

Inspired by Peter's black card and vase posting ( https://www.eos-magazine-forum.com/s...-Card-and-vase ), I thought I might try something similar with one of the orchids from the bathroom.

I don't possess any black card, but in The Range today I spotted Poster Paper (760mm * 10m) in a variety of colours at £3.99 a roll or 2 for sick squid, so I bought a black & a white roll with the intention of using them as a draped background.

First attempt below (it is a focus stack):-

Second attempt - using the 100mm macro and ring flash:-

    All suggestions for improvement welcome!

Oh I may have call in to a Range store to pick up some poster paper. Your second image seems to have captured the orchid better than the first. I wonder if the stacking edit has caused the colour shift in the petals to be more pronounced

The second has worked better, probably due to the flash

Looks an ideal and cheap solution for a background, might have to check out the local Range

Petre & Stan - thanks for looking and commenting.

I agree that the flash image may have captured the colour of the orchid more accurately, but I find the image very flat - the focus stack has (for me at least) a lovely 3D aspect.

P.S. Glad you found the Range info. of use.

The flash makes the game image pop

I am with the majority here, in that I prefer the flash image.

If I may suggest bringing out the stem a little, as the flowers seem to be floating in mid air.

Tom, Colin & Trev - thank you for looking and commenting.

Despite the weight of opinion in favour of the flash image, I still feel that it is a bit one-dimensional.

I therefore decided, since the camera was not very close to the subject, to try a conventional bounced flash and to my eyes at least it is better than the ring flash version.

I agree John, ring flashes do create that flat no shadow type of image.
BTW I'm now the proud owner of a roll of white and black poster paper [emoji106]
