    Keywords.....Photos or Photographs

    I am thinking of some keywords for my railway photography website and wanted some advice on the following.

    If you were searching for 'steam train photos' would you type in 'steam train photos' or 'steam train photographs' or maybe something else?

    Neither! I'd type in "steam train" and then click on the "Images" tab.

      I would be unlikely to use photograph but might use photo / picture / image ...

        Hi Colin;

        I'm in danger of 'teaching grandma to suck eggs' here; so forgive me if I'm giving you stuff you're already familiar with. I wouldn't use 'photo', 'image' or 'picture'; those are givens; but I might use 'photography' as a genre which would suit your website - which is very nice by the way... clean & simple - as it should be... nice job.

        Anyhow; there are two sets of keywords you need to be looking at; generic & those specific to the image. The more you can add, the better your chances of a successful return, given that experienced searchers will often use 2, 3, 4 or more keywords - all of which are required to be met for a successful hit.

        Tags I might use would be;
        Generic; (replace 'steam' with 'diesel' where appropriate!)
        - Steam
        - Steam Train
        - Steam Locomotive
        - Steam Rail
        - Heritage Rail
        - Heritage Steam
        - Heritage Steam Train
        - Heritage Train
        - Heritage Steam Locomotive
        - Preserved Steam
        - Preserved Steam Train
        - Preserved Steam Locomotive
        - Preserved Rail

        Specifics might be;
        - Engine class; A4, A6, Standard 4, Black 5 etc.
        - Specifics; Bullied, Pacific, Streamlined
        - Running Number
        - Locomotive Name
        - Owner - Popular; e.g GWR
        - Owner - Full Name - Gloucester, Warwickshire Railway
        - Operator; Cathedral's Express, Railtours etc.
        - Headboard Name - if carried
        - Location
        - Old BR operator; LNER, LMS, GWR etc.
        - Bogey configuration - maybe!

        I'm sure you'll think of more; but hopefully that'll get you started...

        Good luck...
        Cheers;
        Lee
