            Nice image, from memory I think they are referred to as dark phase and the colouring is a melanistic mutation.

              It's called Melanistic. A rare genetic mutation that is quite rare, causing a much darker than normal colouring. If you like, the opposite of Albino.

              Lovely shot Stan, good composition and lighting to show Ashley off at his best.

                natural lighting, shot in the barn but near the opening so light was flooding in

                unlikely to find them in the wild as the mother is likely to kill the chick cos he or she is "different", in the same way adults cant be released in the wild as they would likely be mobbed and killed by other barn owls

                        Reminds me of a cat we had some years ago.. She was mostly white but not when she once returned from accidentally being locked overnight in a neighbours coal bunker !!!
